Suggestions for Polymorph at 8th level

Is Polymorph a magical effect?

yes, it is a magical effect.

Is your size increased after you Polymorph from a medium size to a large size?

No, you have the form of the new creature, your size does not change. You become a new creature and its size may or may not be different than the size you were before, but it is immaterial.

There have been a lot of threads on this already, but the point is pretty clear. Enlarge person changes your size, polymorph does not.

Well, even if it works this way (I don't agree, but it really doesn't matter, as both versions are exactly the same in effect), you still wouldn't be able to turn into a treant.

"The new form must be within one size category of your normal size."

good enough then, that is actually a valid arguement ;)

now we just have to debate 'normal' for a few pages as other threads have done with other instances of normal..lol

I am not sure about the limitation in size. Alter Self is limited to one size step, but Polymorph only says the following:

You can’t cause a subject to assume a form smaller than Fine

which I think overrides the Alter Self. In fact, Polymorph Any Object (which doesn't add anything about size, and works like Polymorph) has even examples of turning a pebble into a human or a manticore into a shrew.

Skip's article about Polymorph said:
The assumed form's size can be anything from Fine to Colossal.
The kind of creature you choose for the assumed form determines the size. The subject becomes the same size as an average member of its kind. For example, if you turn the subject into a troll, the subject becomes size Large, which is the standard size for a troll.

This Page has some great resources, including a list of Polymorph forms and Alter Self.

Nice resource! :) Although I am not sure the hydra gets one attack per head, it depends about how you rule on the topic of "extra limbs = no extra attacks".

That would certainly be new to me, and I doubt it would be a good idea... Polymorph is bad enough with only one step up on the size scale. :D

I have to say that it would be new to me the other way around... shaping into a rat to scout ahead is an old favourite. :)

The HD limit however should incidentally prevent assuming very large forms until higher levels.

Hi there,
Sorry to inform you, but unless your human sorc is naturally a large creature, you can't polymorph into a treant. You're limited to a max size of 1 step greater than your own size -- a real pain in the arse if you're playing a gnome wizard, let me tell you!

Treants are fine - polymorph trumps the size limitations which used to be in 3e and are still there in alter self.

Check out the latest installment of "rules of the game" for express clarification of this issue.

Cheers
