Has that ever been a thing in D&D - I mean, you learn from previous encounters in the very significant sense of gaining levels, but it doesn't matter what those past encounters were, nor if the current one is in any way related.

The idea is to make it so.... The strategic side of things being almost entirely spell caster. I find out the enemy is vulnerable to ice so next fight I memorise the right spells. Or now we know its immune to not silver or some such.
