(Suspended) OOC 3.5 Eberron Shipwrecked Campaign

doghead, I don't think I could allow an elf with dragon heritage to also take the Right of Counsel feat. Unless you have a REALLY good explanation as to why, that just wouldn't make sense within the milieu.

Still toying with concepts. Right now, I am probably going with a shifter druid. I will probably put together a melee specialist as a back-up (it looked like someone pitched a shifter barbarian, but I haven't seen any follow-up yet so I'll prep something just in case- either a warforged barbarian/fighter or a swashbuckling fighter/rogue from House Orien).

The shifter druid uses the druidic version of the shifter paragon levels, shifter druid racial substitution levels, and some shifter feats from Races of Eberron- she will probably take a level of ranger, then full druid with an eye towards the Moonspeaker PrC. I have a background partially written- I just need to type it up. Will post as Work-in-progress shortly.

She does not need to have a Dragonmark to be a member of another house. As for her noticing his... I propose that she did when they finally became intimate but at that point, didn't care.

Of course, if that is still too iffy for you, I'm sure I can come up with something else to make the House reduce his ranking. Dragonmarked houses can be so demanding on the behavior of their members.

I was looking over the Human Paragon levels. Do I add 4+ Int skills points per Paragon level to the amount of Skill points I already have? Also, the Adaptive Learning, do I pick a skill I already have or one that is not a class skill and it then becomes a class skill? I've never used/played with Paragon levels before so it is a little confusing for me.

Thanks.

[sblock= Background]
K’ihren was born in the city of Fairhaven in Aundair- both of her parents had been raised in the forests of the Eldeen Reaches far to the west, but when their village was destroyed by bandits during the Great War, they turned their backs on the old ways and migrated to civilization. Both of them found good jobs in the big city, and there was a significant community of other shifters who did likewise. Many of the shifter children were raised semi-communally, watched over by those adults with the free time and inclination to do so. In many cases, these were elderly or infirm shifters, some wounded in the war- many of them had far more nostalgic ideas about the old ways and the wild lands than K’ihren’s parents, both of whom were determined to become civilized folk. K’ihren was her parents’ third child, and even from birth she was small and frail. Both of her older siblings, like her parents, enjoyed the comforts of the big city- and even as a child K’ihren was different. From an early age, she seemed happiest listening to some of the stories from her elders- the tales of the old ways and the deep forests. As soon as she could walk, practically, she developed a habit of wandering off when unattended- more often than not, she was found in a neighbor’s garden, or in the grove of trees at the end of the street, or in a noble’s hedge maze; anywhere where there were green and growing things, and the soft sound of the wind in the leaves. Her parents, determined to live a 'civilized, modern life', were particularly dismayed by her claims to hear voices on the wind and to see messages in the clouds. As she grew, K’ihren rarely joined her siblings and the other shifter children in their races and rough-and-tumble games, no matter how much they encouraged her- in many ways the deeply ingrained predator instinct that most shifters had seemed almost completely absent in her. And she showed little inclination to any of the trades that her parents pointed her towards. She began to spend more time with some of the elders in the shifter community- while none of them had formal druidic training, they did have tales of such folk- and K’ihren soaked up every word like a sponge. By the time she reached the age of twelve, K’ihren had learned everything she could from the local elders- and her habit for wandering seemed to expand by the day. She was no longer content to stay within the bounds of the city, and she was often gone for days at a time. Her parents grew more and more unhappy, and their punishments ever more severe- as one might expect, it was only a matter of time before things reached a breaking point.
On her 13th birthday she left home for good, carrying only a bedroll, some spare clothes, and a few odds and ends. She headed west, traveling mostly at night- guided by the light of the moons that she knew her people held sacred. It was mostly blind luck that she wasn’t robbed or murdered as she traveled- she was often cold, wet, and hungry but she was stubborn enough to persevere. After weeks of travel, she finally reached the borders of the true forests, well beyond the formal boundaries of Aundair. As one might expect, a border patrol found her almost immediately- once she explained herself, they brought her deeper into the forest and turned to her over to the leaders of the local druidic circle. While the druids respected her motivations, their training was not open to everyone- nor was it free. K’ihren was tested, as were all those who sought druidic training- and despite her determination and all she had learned, she had, after all, been born and raised in the city. Her fate hung in the balance then, and she was obliged to plead her case before the most revered figure in the druidic hierarchy of the Eldeen Reaches- the Great Druid Oalian. For someone so quiet and unassuming, this was a terrible trial, as great as any dragon. Luckily for K'ihren, Oalian's wisdom was profound- she barely managed to stammer out a few words before he read the truth that was written on her soul.
Oalian's pronouncement was swift- it was clear, he said, that K'ihren was destined to be a druid, but it would be a long process. The Moonspeaker sect was so rare that even one potential candidate was a valuable resource- but K'ihren would have to begin her druidic education as the youngest initiates did. Her first years of study would have her exposed to the wisdom and tradition of each of the sects- only once she had progressed appropriately would she be allowed to petition the Moonspeakers for further training. K'ihren spent nearly five years in this first round of studies, but in time she was accepted as a fully initiated druid. Then her education was turned over to the shifters within the various druidic traditions- they realized that her lingering ties to civilization, and her lack of exposure to the true heritage of her people were hindering her spiritual growth. In a sacred ceremony, she was bonded with one of the ancestral predator spirits of the wood, and then assigned to spend a year with the shifter bands that patrolled the forest around Greenheart. It was a diffcult time- while she was deeply attuned to nature, her personal inclinations were for the wind, the plants, and the gentler animals; she was hardly a hunter at heart. She completed that year, though with difficulty, and in doing so she found a deep connection with her shifter heritage- her parents would have been appalled. But her predatory instincts were still as weak as a child's- she had the heart of a wild beast, but not a hunter. Her druidic intructors helped her perform a great ritual, to receive visions of the path that she would have to take to gain further enlightenment. With the skill and wisdom at their disposal, they were able to interpret the signs from her vsion- and to foretell a great journey. With great surprise, they saw that her path led far from Greenheart, far from the Reaches, and even far from Khorvaire- whatever future lay before her, it would not come from learning at the feet of the wisest and most experienced druids in the land; it would come alone, in the distant land of Xen'drik. The visions she had been shown were clear- whatever future she had, whether it led to greatness or death, she would find her destiny in the jungles and ruins far from home. Within a day, she had gathered her few possessions and said her farewells- and her next journey began...

[sblock= Assorted notes]
>1. One word character description: Fluttershy
>2. Future planning: K'ihren has journeyed to Xen'drik as part of a vision quest along her road to becoming a Moonspeaker- she intends to take her next level as Druid 2. One of the things that is limiting her spiritual growth is her underdeveloped predator instincts. As part of learning to embrace that part of her shifter heritage, she will plan to take the Extra Shifter Trait (wildhunt) feat at level 6- she will also take that level as Ranger 1. Then she will take 3 more Druid levels, including the racial substitution levels at Druid 4 and 5. After that, Moonspeaker.
>3. Druidic affiliation: K'ihren has received at least some instruction from each of the major druidic traditions in the Eldeen Reaches (learning to speak elvish with the Greensingers and Orcish with the Gatekeepers), as well as some more general religious grounding. She is most comfortable with the Wardens of the Wood, the largest and best-known sect, and is uncomfortable with the Children of Winter. Her true goal is to become a Moonspeaker, and they have members from all of the traditions.
>4. General role/philosophy: Summoner/support caster, ranged combatant (sling), scout.
>5. Sources: PHB (base druid class); ECS (base shifter race info); Races of Eberron (Dreamsight trait, Moonspeaker PrC, Shifter instincts and Dreamsight elite feats, shifter druid racial substitution levels); Eberron Paragons download (Shifter paragon-druidic variant)

While I am aware that you do not have to have a mark to be a member of a house, I had originally inferred that she was an heir herself, which is the main cause of scandal. It was my thinking that only heirs (those who actually have the tattoos) were prohibited from marrying so I looked into it to refresh myself. The main issue is the rise of mixed marks, which are too common among the children of two heirs from different houses. And I found a reference to intermarriage between houses being banned (not specifying whether it applied to all members of a house or just heirs) after the War of the Mark. So taking a very broad interpretation, I suppose that it could be taken to mean all members are prohibited from intermarriage. I imagine in such a situation though, the woman's heritage might be of import. If she is a member of the house but no member of her blood family has ever manifested a mark, I do not see either house having a very big problem with it. If, on the other hand, she had a father or cousin with a mark it would obviously be a scandal.

Nevertheless, I did find a reference which said that heirs who have "strayed" are usually allowed to keep their position so long as their give up their children (for what purpose it does not say, but probably nothing good). And there is also a reference which says that most houses don't take the issue that seriously in 998 YK because the War of the Mark was so long ago the reasons have faded from memory of living house members. At any rate, I think it would make more sense if the woman was at least blood-related to someone with a different mark. She'd also have to be fairly naive (or simply a rebel) to not realize or not care Duran was a member of another house if they met while he was training. Even if they first met in a bar or some social gathering completely outside of a house enclave, I can't imagine "so why are you in town?" not coming up in one of their first conversations. Any of this could be possible, of course. I just didn't get that impression when I first read Duran's background. So your explanation works for me. Perhaps your character did not necessarily lose position in the house, but feels as though he has lost favor due to the incident.

Re: human paragon skills, treat it as if you are multiclassing into a different class, because that is all it is; I might be confusing you guys by saying I am treating you as 1st-level for purposes of experience, so just forget that for now. Treat your character as a 4th-level character who took his first level as a base class and his next three levels as a paragon class. Re: Adaptive Learning, the human paragon, like the expert (class), gets to choose 10 skills to be human paragon class skills. Adaptive Learning allows him to treat one of those skills as a class skill for all classes. For example, say you choose Search as one of your ten skills for human paragon. Then for Adaptive Learning, you make Search an adaptive skill. This means that even if you were to take your next level as barbarian, wizard, or whatever, you would treat Search as if it were a class skill for that class from that point forward, allowing you to always spend one skill point for one full rank in Search. Hope that clears things up.

I had forgotten about Wildhunt Elite. That's a powerful feat, but since you are planning on playing as more of a fighter than a caster, it isn't terribly unbalanced, so I will allow it. Everything else looks good.

Looks good so far. Have you decided upon a druid sect for K'ihren (see p. 75 of the ECS)? The default sect is the Wardens of the Wood, which is closest to the druid described in the PH, if you want to keep things simple. You need not take any associated sect feats, but you will need to pick one of the five sects of which to be a member.

To EVERYONE: Please, please, please let me know where you are taking your feats and other such abilities from when you post requests or builds if they are not in the core rulebooks, the ECS, or the XPH. My memory is pretty good, but it isn't perfect. You will save me a lot of hunting and Google searches if you just note which book stuff comes from, which I will greatly appreciate.

doghead, I don't think I could allow an elf with dragon heritage to also take the Right of Counsel feat. Unless you have a REALLY good explanation as to why, that just wouldn't make sense within the milieu.

The way I saw it, once, a long time ago, Rains family was powerful and favoured. At some point during the Age of Monsters, the the family was approached by a faction of the dragons with the aim of creating an alliance in order to open communication between the two races, and put an end the devastating wars that occurred between the two races. It was a risky gambit, and it failed. The curse/bloodline/affinity whatever that Rain is experiencing is a result of that alliance.

The feat is pure flavour. As you pointed out, the characters are never likely to even set foot on Aerenal and so the feat will have little in game value. I just like the idea. I have this image of her, many years down the track probably, fronting up to the City of the Dead looking to exercise her right of counsel. Powerful forces would be against her. Does she have allies of her own? Can she convince the to grant her her right? To let her live? What could be so important as to make her take such a terrible risk in the first place? I think it would be an awesome scene.

So thats what I was thinking. Of course, the feat doesn't have to be taken now (although it seems odd that it is something a character could 'gain' rather than having from birth). There are a lot of other feats that would be more useful now, so saying no would probably be doing the character a favour. If given the choice, I would take it (which is why I can't min/max for peanuts). But if it jars, and you are not happy with it, I will take something else. So I will leave it up to you. I'm happy with whichever choice you make.

I think regardless of Rain's family's former stature, the fact that they consorted with dragons would remove any right of counsel. So, no I don't think the feat is applicable in this case. Perhaps an ancestor of your character had the right of counsel until breeding with dragons. Your character is knowledgeable of this fact and wishes to restore the family name?

Remember elves are long-lived and memory dies hard. In addition the undying councilors were around at that time and still have memories of the events that transpired. The progeny of elf-dragon liaisons were killed in those events. That kind of thing isn't going to be easily forgiven.

No problem. I should finish off levelling Rain up to L4 in the next few days.

I made some tweaks to Duran's background. Here it is:

Duran is a member of the Dragonmarked House Tharashk. He has lived in Sharn in the kingdom of Breland his entire life. Over the years, he has traveled to other House enclaves for training. As part of his training, he has taken part in a few expeditions to locate large fields of dragonshards. Although they were not usually successful, they did serve as valuable training in locating items of value.

As is sometimes customary, Duran’s parents had set up an arranged marriage with his distant cousin Tarra Velderan. They first met when they were still just children. Since then, they have seen each other several times. While Duran liked her as a friend, he did not love her. He felt he had no choice but to marry her. Duran didn’t want to marry someone he didn’t love

Duran’s life changed when he met a nice young woman named Adele Ennes 2 years ago while attending a show in the entertainment district of Sharn. The two of them struck up a conversation and ended up going to dinner after the show. They saw each other a few more times as friends before they mutually decided to take their relationship to the next level. Duran felt something for Adele, possibly love. It was an emotion he was not familiar with.

After Adele and Duran had been dating for 3 months, she confided to him that she had been keeping a secret from him. She revealed that she too, was a member of a Dragonmarked House. She had not developed a mark herself but, she revealed, her mother had a powerful one. The two of them had a long talk about their situation. Neither one of them wanted to end their relationship but they both knew that their families would not approve, especially since Duran’s parents had set up an arranged marriage.

Unknown to the young couple, someone did see the two of them together and reported it to House Tharashk. Duran’s parents confronted him about the relationship. He admitted to them that they were in love. His parents were livid. They forbade him from ever seeing Adele again. Duran and his parents argued about this for some time before Duran stormed out to go find Adele. He was surprised to see 2 Warforged standing guard outside her apartment. They refused him entry into the apartment and kept repeating that Adele was not home.

Duran knew he could not get past the guards and returned home. Once there, his parents told him that ‘That Girl’ was being sent away for her own good.

Heartbroken but wishing to get back into the House’s good graces, Duran decided he needed to do something extraordinary to improve his standing in the House. Growing up, he had heard rumors of powerful lost artifacts and schemas in Xen’drik. He formulated a plan. He needed to get to Xen’drik and investigate these stories and rumors. Logically, he knew that many others had likely already tried to find these items without success. That didn’t stop him though. He was convinced he needed to investigate the rumors of lost artifacts and massive fields of dragonshards waiting to be discovered. He believes that if he finds something of great value to the House, they will look favorably upon him. If he increases the wealth of the House enough, he thinks they might allow him to renew his relationship with Adele. If not, he might have to leave the House and elope with her, assuming she hasn’t been turned against him by her family.

Recently he booked passage on a ship traveling to Xen’drik. He had no idea what awaited him there. He only knew in his heart it would be exciting and beyond anything he had ever experienced previously.

I like the revised background a lot, Graybeard. Makes a lot more sense to me now. 32 point buy approved.

pathfinderq1, I forget if I mentioned it already, but you are also approved for 32 point buy. One quick question: Oalian is at least somewhat tied to the Wardens of the Wood from what I recall. Is that the sect you are leaning towards? The moonspeaker prestige class isn't necessarily a sect. AFAIK, members of any druidic sect could be a moonspeaker, so long as they are shifters.
