based on my poop thread i wondered- "can swallow whole be used by a medium opponent vs tiny opponents or such?"

can my fighter try to swallow the stirge?

should swallow whole be availabel to anyone with an appropriate size difference over their opponent?

assuming they have a mouth and such...

This is obviously outside the main rules, so there is no official answer.

As for a practical house rule, I think they'd need to require a 'reasonable' limitation on this type of thing. Consider the size of the mouth and the size of the target before allowing this sort of thing.

A stirge's body is about 1 foot long with a 2 foot wingspan. There are not many people that can get that down their throat ...

Officially swallow hole is a special ability, not a function of size. It only happens to be a feature of bigger creatures.

Can your fighter even bite a stirge? Would that be a normal unarmed attack?

Even if you allow attempts (options not restrictions!) It would probably be best to limit medium sized humanoids to only swallow whole things the size of normal spiders.

But hey, if your concept for the fighter is that he/she [Probably inappropriate for grandmother presence conversation] . . . oh damn, I lose.

Swallow Whole is an Extraordinary special ability. It is only available to races that have the quality listed in their descriptions, just like Regeneration or Blindsight or Tremorsense.

Unless your Medium-size fighter is a magically shrunken Purple Worm or Tendriculos, or some other race with "Swallow Whole (Ex)" in its description, you are out of luck.

I'd argue that a medium-sized creature could easily swallow something whole...provided it was Diminutive or Fine. A human being couldn't swallow a Stirge whole any more that one can swallow a cat.

The Extraordinary special ability doesn't imply that only larger creatures can swallow things whole. It merely represents the fact that a Gargantuan creature is capable of doing that due to their proportion to the PCs. If a PC was fighting a housefly, by all means he has the Swallow Whole extraordinary ability.
