D&D 5E Sword Coast Legends: After the fall.

A big problem for video games today is getting enough attention to garner enough users to allocate some of their game-playing time to it. The tentpole games get so much game-time that there's little left over for the second tier. There is so much content in these games and only so much time available.

This is not the article I'm thinking of but it's along a similar thread: http://www.polygon.com/2015/1/21/7865937/video-games-are-too-damned-long

And this situation is not getting better.

Its is rather sad; i thought sword coast legends was a decent game as long as you didn't expect it to be likebthe d&d 5th edition table top rpg. The computer game rpg genre has more focus on combat and thus classes which relied on limited resources (ie regained only during a rest) tend not to translate well to a computer game.

Also a shame: the d&d 4th edition rules would have lend itself well to a more tactical computer game where emphasis is on the tactical challenge; more a tactical wargame than an rpg. However, no computer games with that rule set were released. I would have bought it if it became available.

The baldurs gate bioware games were good; i played them a lot. However, the 2nd edition rules on which they were based were difficult to work with in the game itself. I would love a release of those games under 3d edition or even 5th edition.

I remember a comment from one of the Inxile game designers who are making the new Torment game. They were saying that it was very difficult to deal with the WotC licensing department which is why they ended up going with Monte Cooks Numenera setting instead of the original Planescape.

They claimed that in public, but got egg on their face when WotC let it be known that inXile had never approached them on the topic.

So the WotC licensing department is so bad that they dont even know that Inxile had approached them? Because do you really believe that Inxile would not have at least tried to get a license for Planescape? Doubtful at best.

And people wonder why we get crap DnD cRPGs?

I would say they probably wanted to do a Numenera game, but also wanted to trade in on the legacy of Planescape Torment; the context of the claim was a fan question as to why not another Planescape game, IIRC. So a small white lie about not being able to get the license which they had not tried to get at all, embarrassing revelation of the truth when they probably assumed WotC would neither notice nor care.

Ok, so it looks like we have two differing claims with only the supporting evidence of 1 bad DnD cRPG and 1 legacy cRPG being produced using a non-DnD license.

There is no "evidence" except they said, they said. However, for the two competing truth claims, inXile is the one who had a profit motive to be dishonest about the topic.

Mmm, and the WotC staff member obviously has the motive of covering their ass when their boss finds out that they missed out on the project.

Full disclosure: I have played the heck out of the original Torment and also backed the Torment 2 kickstarter.

Haven't played the original, heard it was good. Don't back video game KickStarters, due to the pitfalls they fall into (what year is Numenera supposed to be released again...?).

We may see a decent action game tied to the movie, and we may see another mediocre MMO, hopefully tied to Sigil so the brand can expand past the FR.

Otherwise, until such a time as Hasbro has an in-house studio, video games are going to be...dicey..as it were.
