That was quick - X-files movie due out in July?

I remember seeing posts here relatively recently that sounded speculative.

And now I see this which says the movie is due out July 25th!

Carter, who also directs the new movie, said it takes place in the present and uses a story envisioned when the series ended. While the show's sprawling alien mythology isn't part of the plot, Carter said there is a reference to Scully's seemingly supernatural son, William, who was born in season eight and later given up for adoption.

The film is due out July 25.

Carter was tightlipped about the title.

"I can't tell you," he said. "I know what I want it to be, but Fox has some ideas of their own."

Why do this? Seriously, this sounds like it's one of their "freak of the week" episodes made into a ninety-minute feature and put into theaters. That might have made sense when the series was at the height of its popularity (like back when the first movie came out) but now? Any further X-Files movie should just deal with (if not resolve) the metaplot and end things once and for all.

Ehh, I like the "Freak of the Week" storylines in X-Files a lot more then the whole Alien Conspiracy metaplot, I found it ended up bogging down the series and no matter how much Smoking Man goodness they threw at it, it just left me wanting to see more freaks instead.

So as such I approve this plot!

I think a monster of the week episode is a perfect movie. Monster/horror movies are in right now, the characters are terrific, I for one can't wait for a chance to see a well-written 90 minute X-files episode.

Word.

After a while the whole on-going alien/govt thing got lame.

Less Drama, More Trauma!

Since the show's been off the air for a while now, I'm glad they aren't doing a storyline that would require so much re-explaining of the alien backstory that I've mostly forgotten.

This will be one I go to with lowered expectations. I may be pleasantly surprised but it will be a surprise if they can recapture the magic.

This is actually also my fear for Supernatural, that they will get too bogged down with the whole Hunters vs. Hell metaplot, that it will screw up the good-old fun of "driving across the country taking on monsters".

Luckily so far they have enough mini-plots to keep it from being bogged down, but I hope this Hell-plotline gets figured out either in this season or before the end of next.
