Insulting an intellectual take on writing (or at least a higher grade level of vocabulary) isn't a better take from my point of view. Awkward and pathetic? Not exactly polite.
Okay. Do you have a better term for what was happening here? It was what it was. Sugar-coating it isn't going to make it less goofy, nor is it a kindness to do so.

I never found it goofy, and certainly not awkward and pathetic, and would never use those terms to describe something in a discussion, because it is insulting and inflammatory.

Look, I'm glad the 1E works were written in this manner. They did lend a kitsch and... imbue a curiosity? I don't know. The style added to the product in some way. But there's no pretending this was quality writing or denying what the provenance of the style was.

Thank you for that, sincerely. But I still see the language you're using here as insulting, and likely to make people disagree with you needlessly angry.
