The Dark Sun Weapon Breakage Rule - How do you feel about it?

What is the benefit of having a metal weapon?

I like the weapon break rules, but it does seem like they need to have something to make the metal weapons "better" otherwise event if they break non-metal weapons still get to re-roll an auto miss- while metal weapons just miss...

Yes, some to think of it it is odd even metal weapons can break.

But if they are rerolling a 1, there needs to be some drawback.

Easy rewrite:

If you roll a natural 1 on your original attack roll, you can choose to reroll the attack. If you are using a non-metal weapon, the weapon automatically breaks. If you are using a metal weapon, it will only break on a 1 through 5 on your second attack roll. If you choose not to reroll, your opponent gets an opportunity attack.

There you go.

Reason to reroll? Check.

Reason not to reroll? Check.

Metal weapons being breakable doesn't bother me at all. If you think about it, it is easy to come up with a reason why. Metal is very rare on Athas, but that doesn't mean that the quality of that metal ore is any good. It seems to me that the less ore there is the more likely the ore is going to be contaminated.

That seems a little excessive. I would change the OA to granting CA to that enemy.

Being allowed to have the opportunity yo reroll a miss and make it a hit, with 75% chance of having no consequence is not a 'drawback.'

Second chances with a possible and unlikely cost are not drawbacks, but are actually bonuses.

I think it would be neat if when a magic weapon broke it unleashed a burst of defiling energy (based on power of the item.)

Or maybe it unleashed like a preserving energy burst... Magic life-force returned to the world. :P

That's a good idea. Can't give you more XP though.

Probably more the former... it's not like you can unkill the life that went into that spell.
