D&D General The History of Alignment: Why D&D Has the Nine-Point Alignment System 4 UR Memes

Man, my friends and I were happily ignoring alignment since the 90's and our AD&D 2e games. I can clearly remember most of my favorite 3.X characters I ever played; I don't think I could remember what their "listed" alignment was, and I struggle to peg them anywhere on the nine-point scale even in retrospect.

Also, I know it's small potatoes and not even the worst example of this particular style of awfulness from Gygax, but I had to double-take at:

Get Out Ugh GIF

My rule of thumb is this-
50% of the people don't read any of the OP.
70% of the people don't read the OP carefully.
85% of the people that do read the OP? They don't bother opening any spoilers.

And approximately ALL OF YOU DON'T FOLLOW THE LINKS I PROVIDE!!!
If'n you ain't the granddaddy of all liars.
The little creatures of nature, they don't know that they're ugly.
That's very funny, a fly marrying a bumblebee.

I TOLD YOU ID SHOOT! BUT YOU DIDNT BELIEVE ME! WHY DIDNT YOU BELIEVE ME!!!! JUST FOLLOW THE LINKS!

Sorry, had to get that off my chest, nothing to do with your comment. But I read that, and I was just like ... yeah, those names. For those of you who don't dig on spoilers, here's the full list that was in the spoiler, with my friend, SNARFZODIAKILLER, providing some comments.

Snarf comment-
That's a total of:
Six that refer to biblical (of some type) things.
Six Greek.
One Native American.
One ... we will say sanskrit ...
One Suel.
And one that .... eh, combines words.

Correction: One fake made-up British nonsense likely coined by James Fennimore Cooper (yes, really).

Yup. But honestly, given waves arms all the other stuff, appropriation of colonialist nonsense about Native Americans is probably the best outcome. At least it wasn't an attempt to put in real Native American mythology!

Snarf looks at his beloved copy of Deities & Demigods....

Fun fact: the original print is up on the Internet Archive, if you want to see and explore the absolute train wreck that it is.

I have an original (if you know what I mean cough ... Moorcock ... Lovecraft ...) Deities & Demigods.

And now is the time when I have to admit ... I love that book, with all the cultural appropriation and trainwreck that it is. Thing is, yes, saying that it was problematic is akin to saying that the Titanic had a few minor issues on its maiden voyage.

But at that time? Other than D'Aulaires, there weren't a plethora of mythology options available. So I will treasure it always because that was the ur-text that made me go and find the good (as in real) stuff. Of course, I still remember the first time I read a scholarly work of Norse mythology, and I was like ... THAT ISNT TRUE! IT HAS STUFF THAT IS TOTES DIFFERENT* THAN WHAT IS IN DEITIES & DEMIGODS! THIS FANCY BOOK IS LYING TO ME! But I quickly got over that. :)

*Fun fact- my slang came ... from the future!

ETA- as I was writing the above, I kept thinking ... MOORCOCK ... and laughing to myself. I guess age doesn't impart wisdom.

'tis a Milton reference
View attachment 388374

Eh .... I've been down that rabbit hole. Some people are like, "Oh, it's Finnish." Which, maybe, Mordenkainen and all. Others are all, "Sumerian, bruh. Guys in my high school were all into the Mashu. No big deal." And yet others note Milton, and refer to a poem that a colleague of Milton wrote.

But none are definitive. And I have difficulty believing Gygax tracked down an obscure poem by a colleague of Milton that doesn't even technically use the term "Twin Paradises."
