Independent of the Harry Potter thing, there was a leveraged buyout of HBO (the premium cable movie channel with a reputation for first rate films and TV shows -- arguably some of the best shows in American history are from there), in which the schlocky reality show company (that used to be a science-focused channel) Discovery bought them out.

To reduce the huge debt they're now saddled with, the new company has been cutting shows left and right, cancelling completed movies like Batgirl and even yanking popular and completed shows off the channel.

Within a year, they've gone from being the obvious best streamer (after working out some early pandemic kinks with their app) to below average and they're apparently not done with the madness yet. Next up, they appear to be about to remove the HBO name from their app, meaning it'll just be called "Max."

🤷‍♂️
I don't think that I've watched anything on Discovery for.... 5 years?

When they decided to do a megalodon "documentary," I was done. I am a big marine biology nerd and it is appalling how many kids and even adults believe the megalodon isn't extinct, based on the fact that the Discovery Channel ran a "documentary" full of faked footage saying so.

FFS that would be like Kleenex dropping the name and just calling themselves “tissues”…

When they decided to pull Westworld off the service, to say nothing of airing the final season, all bets were definitely off.

Honestly, if people haven't watched The Wire or the Sopranos by this point, it's probably a good idea to clear a few weekends and binge them.

I'm imagining a world where there is some super-powered-force that enforces self-proclaimed boycotts. So if you ever publically proclaim that you will never eat/drink/watch/play/buy/shop/listen/watch something ever again, or until the producer of that thing performs a specific act, then this force will wreak horrible vengeance on you if you backtrack.

I wonder how messy that could get in a world of deep-fakes that try to goad people into doing it.

Like a self-imposed Geas Spell. "I will never shop here again!" OK, you can never shop here again, on penalty of a migraine headache that will knock you on your butt for 24 hours, if not kill you outright. I can just imagine the Karen corpses littering the sidewalks.

I had to have serious conversations with my kids about fake documentary shows like Ancient Aliens and Ghost Hunters.

It's amazing how well the movie "Network" holds up.

I always included Network in the list of films students can choose from for my writing about film unit in my advanced college writing class. The students who chose to watch it/write about it were always amazed by the prescience of that "old" movie but also confused as to why they had never heard of it given how good it is.
