Funny thing is, you should have gone to the doctor. Even without insurance here, a visit probably would have been less than a hundred dollars with prescription. To give you an idea, I was hospitalized this year for about five days. Ambulance ride, MRI, five days in the hospital without insurance would have cost me about 800 dollars total. With insurance obviously it was quite a bit less, but, still.

Here in California an ambulance ride is between $1000-$2000 all by itself. The MRI would be $1500-$2000. And the 5 days at the hospital around $18,000. So $20,000ish. Seems comparable to me!

Did a road trip through parts of the US this summer (I'm Canadian) and had the flashing inspiration "Wait, we need insurance." I looked at the costs of some example trips for people who didnt get insurance, and nearly puked. The travel insurance was less than $50 for my wife and I in comparison to well yeah 20K? Insane.

Had a friend who crashed on a motorcycle ride, in North Carolina. Obviously concussed. Her husband wouldn't call for Life Flight because it would literally cost them their house.

I have travel insurance through work, but always buy a supplemental policy when I head south of the border. (Also in Canada)

You know, if you spent so much energy telling people they are ruining pizza for you, and then suddenly say “oh no I’m not blame them for ruining my enjoyment of pizza”, I’m not inclined to believe you. Some people don’t like your flavor of pizza, and it’s ok. That does not make us bad people, just people with different tastes.

From time to time, I'll write some Croatian family name with far too many consonants and not enough vowels and watch the waitress look around in panic, spy me, the only white dude in the room, and rush over to get us.
