Despite the US and UK focus, it's also an international forum. More than a few people here don't speak English as their native language. There's also a wide range of education levels. All great reasons to not be coy and just come out and explicitly say what you mean rather than leave things up to the other person's guess or inference.

The best defense I have is the Post Office weighed the package at 177 grams. I weighed the magazine I got and it was 100 grams, so even if he had sent two, it should have been over 200 grams when weighed at the post office.

Take photos of the PO weight and the weight you're getting and post them. Be prepared to take complaints to whatever ebay process is involved in complaints and rate him accordingly to his behavior (and include your proof there if you can in the notes). That's about the best you can do.
I just hope you didn't spend an arm and a leg for that second magazine.

Have you filed the complaint with Ebay yet? In my experience they make this surprisingly easy for the buyer. In fact, I've read a lot more complaints from sellers that buyers get refunded for crazy requests. I've only had to complain twice for things that were blatantly wrong that I don't feel any guilt for, but I didn't really need to provide what I would consider "proof" either time. Kinda scary for the sellers, actually.

I bought a book years ago off ebay, open it up, and its French. Go back to the listing, nope, English, pictures, English, contact the guy.

"No that couldnt be."
"Well it is, and heres a picture."
"Well you are Canadian, dont you speak French? No refund."
"Uh....no, either send me the right one, or give me a refund."

A refund it was, but still its all about trust as you say.
