I do have to point out that for some people, the latter is not exactly exciting. In other words they won't enjoy it. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with a game structured that way, but I think its not entirely reasonable to have people that don't find that interesting or enjoyable. I'm perfectly willing to toss a lot more influence over the game than is traditional to players, but I still want to be involved in some fashion myself beyond setup and administration.

Agreed.

Don't get me wrong; I love my friends, and I love playing D&D with them. But I can't imagine anything worse than being unable to participate, and having to just sit back and watch them play without me. Four hours of dice arbitration does not sound like a good time.
 


Surely these are not the only two options available.

I didn't think I'd have to spell out every possible minute-by-minute breakdown of who does what in an RPG. If a GM really can't let players roll with things for even a few minutes, then that's their issue.
