I can't help but think "as long as they're consistent" is doing a massive amount of heavy lifting there. I flat out don't believe most people will fit that unless they write it down, i.e. essentially do house rules.
Isn't that pretty much how many house rules are created?

I think there's a big gap between "niche cases" and a general policy, however, and your post seemed to be recommending the latter. Also "on the fly" was an important qualification in my statement.

You're absolutely right...there is a big difference between niche cases and general policy. (I promise I wasn't trying to be evasive, I'm just trying to avoid dragging an argument from another site over to this one so I was being vague.)

Elsewhere, this argument is about players who want more rules to insulate them against the DM...who, for some reason or another, is considered to be the chief obstacle between The Players and The Fun.

"No, you can't do that to my character because the rules clearly say that spell is (reads a paragraph out of the PHB). Check and mate." (high-fives the players to his left and his right)

I mean...what the heck is that all about? I think I'd rather send everyone home and play Skyrim alone, than try to DM that hot mess.

That exact attitude has cause several of my games to fall apart. From either side of the screen. It’s such an obnoxious way to behave.

Every time I see this GIF I never actually know if it's being deployed sincerely or ironically. It doesn't help that neither the statement nor its opposite are or should be particularly controversial.
I just want to talk to him about getting a better haircut. That one is doing him no favors.

That's entirely fair, and my tendency to roll eyes at "Just let the GM address the problem" may be bleeding through more than is necessary.

Legalistic GMs tend to breed legalistic players. And of course a lot of people carry scar tissue from GM's who's favorite word seems to be "no".

When I ran games, I had a general idea of who and why the BBEG was doing whatever they were doing. Other than that i just rolled with the player's choices.

I also love when new people to this area of the forums comes out of the RPG section and injects themselves like they were always part of the conversation.
