I would say there is some need for that if you've got NPC party members, however, I have seen more than one DM be actively competitive with his players while doing this. I tried to have my NPC party members effectively be comic relief, when doing so. (Dwarf Fighter NPC, to fill out the party. "So, are you cowards going to stand and fight these guys with me?" PCs wisely decide that superior numbers mean retreat is the option. "WAIT FOR ME, YOU COWARDS!")
It helped with my group’s party NPC to let the players dictate what role and powers they have. They turned my innocent little Fey moth into a mix of a White Mage and a Wendigo that Devourers the flesh of the party’s enemies to gain new powers. They are currently trying to find a giant to fight so the Moth can gain a better strength score.

It's really weird how people spend so much time trying to make something into more of a problem than it actually is. If you spent 1/4 as much time trying to think of a solution to the problem you'd have already solved it.

As Grandpapa Snarf always told me, "Snarf, if you can't be a part of the solution, then become a part of the problem. Now, go get yer Grandad some laudanum, whiskey, and smokes. Quit yer whining, tears don't look good on an eight year old."

As long as that line is set during session zero, and the group has defined just how much influence over which things the party has, it's not an issue. But once those parameters have been set, people trying to push those boundaries after having already agreed to them do become a problem.

The problem, of course, is all kinds of people on both sides of the table don't take the time to set expectations; they just assume them.

Is it ever really worth it to bother pointing out the strawman that someone is creating in order to "win" a debate, or is it pointless? The world wants to know. Where's that Tootsie Pop owl when you need him?
