I would never have guessed that, and I have tried a huge variety of them. I will have to start paying particular attention - and so will report back. (With IPA and Sours filling the aisles I'm just happy to find a stout or porter I haven't tried; and since a bunch of those are dessert stouts that probably really skews things).
If you're genuinely curious, you can start here: Beer Judge Certification Program – Promoting beer literacy, recognizing beer tasting and evaluation skills.

American porter and stout are 20A and 20B.

Early in the descriptions they both have "coffee or chocolate" though, so I don't feel too bad not knowing :)

Is porter maltier in average and stout more bitter on average from the descriptions?
Yeah. The kind of bitterness that kicks it over to coffee or dark chocolate is mostly going to be a matter of hopping, not just from the malts. And occasionally, of course, actual coffee and/or dark chocolate.

I was going to make a snarky comment about porters usually tasting like chocolate and stouts usually tasting like coffee. Then I went and found the judging guidelines for beer tastings (specifically American porter and American stout) and ... that's pretty much exactly right. Yay, I'm a nerd.
What would be snarky about the flavor of porters and stouts? I’ll take them any day over an overly floral pale ale (whether American or India).

The like button just stopped offering other choices when held down, it pops up the usual kind of menu for links... Same for anyone else? (Before I go to meta to report it?)
