I want to see the sign for a nonfunctioning down escalator now.

Also obligatory:
A clearly unappreciative audience. 😡
While I love me some Mitch Hedberg, I disagree with him in this instance. An escalator seems harmless, but, hidden under the band, the machine that runs it is basically a giant meat grinder. There have been people who have been pulled into the works for various reasons, and the results have caused maintenance people to have to undergo counseling.

I...I did not know that. I figured there must be some kind of failsafe brake, but it looks like there isn't.

I may never ride an escalator again.

I may never ride an escalator again. Elevators, though, totally fine!
The transit system I used to use was ... well known for its escalators frequently not working. I've seen some of the world's longest escalators in various states of (dis)assembly. "Meat grinder" is a remarkably accurate description of the working bits deep inside. You really, really do not want to get pulled into one, or to be around when someone is.

Just seeing one disassembled is enough to put you off.

It is. Seeing them parked was bad enough.

This system, different station--but about as long.

I found out about it when I saw a news article about a workman who had been carrying a long metal pole for a job at a mall. He wasn't thinking, in a way that I think all of us can say we do from time to time, and held the pole straight up, like a staff. It got caught on an overhead sign or something, and punctured the metal band of the escalator; the mechanism immediately ground the metal band and the workman up. There is a security camera footage from a distance. It doesn't show anything graphic, but you can see him just suddenly fall, throwing an arm in the air as he did, and then he's just... gone.

It's the least graphic death I've been exposed to (like many dumb kids my age, I watched Faces of Death), but that one stays with me. And for that reason, there will be no link.

The T in Boston is notorious for issues. One of our subway cars dragged a guy to his death because the door malfunctioned. Another car caught on fire
