As soon as someone invokes things like verisimilitude or whatnot, the argument is almost never in good faith. It's nearly always about ramming preferences down the throats of everyone else.
Hussar, don't take this wrong man; I agree with you about a lot of things. But at best you're putting the cart in front of the horse here. If people are doing that its overwhelmingly likely because they are being sincere, and are so frustrated that they don't understand why people don't see the problem.
Statistically there are bound to be a few people who are disingenuous about this, but when you go in assuming that, you're almost certainly making a categorical error.
