Is it as strong of a position as saying "The DM's worldbuilding is meaningless?" No turtlemen seems like a narrow creative choice, while DM worldbuilding being maligned to insignificance is the demonization of an entire creative endeavor.

So? Novella length backstories are maligned too and the old-fashioned story railroad is also a creative endeavour that I don't see much pushback for being demonized.

Why do they have to be a tortle? Why not just someone that believes in animism and identifies with turtles? When they came of age they have a ritual to identify their spirit animal and they had a vision of turtles on the back of a massive dragon turtle contemplating the sun as they bask in it? Seems to me you get the same backstory and feel.

Hmm, the character wouldn't look the way I wanted them to, and they wouldn't be cold blooded which means their people wouldn't have the same underlying relationship with the sun. I wouldn't be able to wear a shell painted with religious iconography since i wouldn't gave a shell.

Okay ... no tortles in my world but there are people that follow an animistic religion and identify turtles as their spirit guide. They have all the mannerisms, beliefs, culture and lore of tortles. Not only that, they've been granted the ability to wear holy turtle armor even if their class doesn't qualify. I give you ... Tortle Man!

That to me is compromise. If it's still not good enough then people don't want compromise, just admit you want to be the ones deciding what species are allowed.

This might be acceptable to me, especially as a reflavor of the tortle statblock, and if you let me be cute about it.

not sure I would consider an armed occupation to be tolerated

For this one referring to very beginning of first book, where Tanis, Flint and Tas reunite and run into Toede, where it seems Toede etc are there at invite of seekers, and before the army actually attacks Solace and occupies it. Before that feel is that any war is far-off rumor, but somehow there are lots of goblins around to chase the companions, but in Solace life is going on.

I'm just glad that the game and culture is moving towards the stuff I like more than the stuff you like that's all.
