The Old School: AD&D 1e

[sblock=Lidia]
You scan the scene as you keep the light aloft. You scan the walls and ceiling. Between that and your druidic understanding of all things natural, you note that one of the holes a number of extra centipedes and worms have started to emerge from one of the holes in the wall, about two feet wide.

Something is coming.

[can I do this?: ]

tactical withdrawl to move out of reach, but be at sarge's side to cast spell

"My blades shall hold back the vile undead." Amirad is clearly oblivious to the surging insects as he launches a blistering assault, to little effect.

as long as there is someone else engaged with an opponent you can withdraw and that opponent can not follow. (I can only find the OSRIC rule for this 'fighting retreat' about page 121)
this would let you move behind and next to Stubbs, but not cast the spell this round.

[sblock=ooc]By OSRIC, yes. By 1e, it's a gray area--it's breaking off from melee, but you are still involved. In practice, it's not important because zombies attack at the end of the round, which means they cannot act to disrupt a spell in the middle of casting. So go ahead.[/sblock]

Austin takes his holy symbol in his hand and prays in a soft voice, but the sounds seem to permeate through the battle noises like a lamp brought into a dark room. He then places his hand or sarge and a light pours out onto the dwarf and flows into his wounds, they in turn knit them selves togethger.

Lidia says "Eh guys. Something coming. Not quite sure what. Could be more rats or maybe a giant scorpion." Quickly reviewing her memorised spells, she confirms what she has suspected. She has nothing really suitable for use underground. Of course she can change her cudgel into a magic weapon but she doesn't really fancy getting close to a scorpion.
