My first instinct is for a Half-orc Bard, which will give some (unoptimized) healing. If there's a strong desire among others for a cleric or a rogue, I am happy to comply. I know you say core books only, but since you include the MM, I'll also so that the bard build would work great with a goblin (build with VGTM; non-evil obviously), who might be a more appropriate prisoner. Whatever is decided (and I'm open to input from anyone), I can pull something together quickly.
