D&D 5E Tiefling preview!

Oh boy, I was afraid to come here, but the disappointed are quite rational in their posts. Thank you all. I agree, I was hoping both stories would be core. And man, that art is boring. I want stories in my art. That is just a portrait. Yuck from me all around.

You know, I got to hand it to the devs. They put something this divisive up after the PHB race TOC was posted with the only race using an unknown number of pages is the Tiefling. Maybe there will be a sidebar talking about the demon-descended Tieflings. Maybe the Tiefling race will be 7 pages long. Who knows.

It's totally possible they're just trying to lock down what the "core" tiefling looks like for branding purposes, but will release possible subraces and alterations with upcoming splat and campaign guides.
Exctly.
The word people should be considering is "CORE".
Unfortunatly for some, the Basic game makes some assumptions and forcefeed you a bit of fluff. See the Human race entry and check all that wasted space on Human Names and Ethnicities...
As usual with any RPG, change what you don't like.
It's the most fun part of playing tabletop games anyway. :)

I feel people are again complaining about the orange slice in their free drink. The looks have no effect on how the tiefling plays in your campaign. What I would have preferred is some story meat like variant tiefling abilities - even without any mechanical benefits (but those might be on the next page).
E.g.
56 - You can talk to snakes and read what their skins say.
57 - You can see ethereal beings and invisible spirits.
58 - Your touch turns holy water into regular water.
Etc.

I don't like the 4e tieflings either but there's one picture of them I really like:

Now that's interesting. No sub-races? It's uncertain what the next page might hold, of course, but the ability score bonuses feel "complete."

I'm actually a fan of the 4E Tieflings, and also really like the ones in the pic you posted.

This 5E preview Tiefling to me is just really bad art. Re: the orange slice in the free drink....I don't like cilantro. If someone put too much of it in free salsa I might otherwise like, it would probably ruin it, and I wouldn't eat it. To me, bad art is like a commercial jingle or song you hate that gets stuck in your head. It's an OCD thing, but it does leave a certain impression.
