TWF At Range?

Crass

First Post
Curious... I'm just looking through the SRD at the TWF stuff, and NOWHERE that I can see does it say that you need to use melee weapons, or be making melee attacks... I guess it's an unwritten assumption. How "broken/bent" would it be to use TWF in ranged attacks? Would you be able to throw, say, four weapons at 6th level? And five or six if you have rapid shot?

The reason I'm asking is that I'm in the process of creating a new character - a ranger with TWF options - for a campaign. That character wants to throw a range of weapons, like javelins, throwing axes and light hammers.

Thanks, all!

I don't see why not... I had a fighter who had TWF and threw darts.

And as a sidenote- joke- I asked a similar questions on the boards a while back:

Would you be able to activate two wands with TWF? and the answer was : If, by activating, you mean use it, then yes. You can beat someone over the head with two wands. It is used as a mace...

Just thought it was relevant:D

Thrown Weapons: The same rules apply when you throw a weapon from each hand. Treat a dart or shuriken as a light weapon when used in this manner, and treat a bolas, javelin, net, or sling as a one-handed weapon.

So not only does not it limit you to melee, it actually tells you how to do thrown. :)

I would not, however, permit combining that with Rapid Shot, since they basically serve the same purpose. I don't know if that's actually how the rules work--I haven't found anything that says--but it's how I'd do it were I the DM.

Four weapons? I get three. One that you start out with in each hand (at -2 each), and one extra at -5 BAB, but only if you have Quickdraw (to be able to draw those thrown weapons as free actions).
And with Rapid shot you'd get one more, with all your attacks at -4 (-2 for TWF and -2 for Rapid shot).
With +6 BAB you'd get, with TWF, Quickdraw and Rapid shot, the following attacks: +2/+2/+2/-3

Reloading projectile weapons, even hand crossbow or sling, even with Rapid reload, requires two hands, so they're out.

/Edit
And this should properly be in the rules forum.

Sorry, let me explain:

Assume: Rapid Shot and TWF feats, BAB of, say, +6/+1, using two sets of light weapons - throwing axes. Hence, +6/+1 with prime hand, same with secondary hand. Then rapid shot - would that apply to the prime hand AND the second hand, or to ONLY the prime hand? Hence, my question: 5 attacks or 6? BAB would, I believe, be +2/+2/-3 for prime hand. Would rapid shot also apply to the secondary hand and therefore have the same BAB (+2/+2/-3) progression, or would it be +2/-3, or something completely different?

As for this belonging in the rules forum, how would I get this moved to there? Please excuse my ignorance on this...

Rapid Shot grants you one extra attack at your max BAB, with a -2 penalty. TWF also grants you one extra attack at your max BAB, with a -2 penalty. If you use both in combo, you would effectively get a +2/+2/+2/-3 full attack.

It looks like RS and TWF don't explicitly limit the benefits to an extra _ranged_ attack, and an extra _melee_ attack, respectively, so you could use both of these in combo against any target. Hmm. Messy.

This is incorrect. Fighting with two weapons only gives you 1 attack at your best attack bonus with the off hand weapon, so you'd get +6/+1 with the main weapon and +6 with the off-hand weapon.
