[UPDATED] WotC To Close Forums - Including D&D and M:tG (aka "Welcome New Forum Members to EN World!

WotC has announced that it will be closing its forums, which they refer to as a "former foundation of our community". The forums will close on October 29th. Of course, WotC's forum members are welcome here at EN World (although the expectations are a little different, so please do check the rules if you sign up!) The forums have been around for nearly two decades, in various incarnations, but WotC cites the rise of social media platforms as the reason for the closure.

Here's the announcement in full.

Choosing to retire a former foundation of our community was not an easy decision, but we feel that we must adjust our communications structure to reflect where conversations about Wizards of the Coast games are taking place.

Social media has changed significantly over the last ten years, and discussions about games aren't exclusive to company-hosted forums. The majority of community conversation takes place on third-party websites (such as Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and many other fantastic community-run websites), and it is up to us to evolve alongside our players.

We encourage past and current users to retrieve any information you want to retain from the Community Forums for both Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. The shutdown will occur on October 29, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. PT. We want to provide enough time for our forum members to move their content, and we recognize that given our forum's vibrant user base and extensive history, this may take time. Any information still on the forums on the cut-off date will be deleted.

Thank you to all of our past and current forum users. You helped build our community into what it is now, and we look forward to continuing to interact with you on our many active social platforms.

WotC's Trevor Kidd had a little more to add.

"I could hop onto all the forums having this discussion or I can say it here and let it disseminate. I'm choosing the former. Moving away from running our own forums doesn't mean we think longer conversations or fan sites/forums aren't good or necessary. They are both good & necessary. From what I'm seeing, they flourish and you enjoy them more when they are run/managed by fans.

DnD & RPGs in general are all about story telling & talking with friends. It makes sense that we want to share those stories. So, it's vital that we have places to share those experiences & stories, like forums & fansites. But it's not vital that #dnd run those.

Closing our forums does not in any way lessen our interactions. We'll still be talking & lurking in your social media & fan sites. And the idea that forums are going away because dnd &/or magic are doing poorly - that's ludicrous! :P Both are doing very, very well.

We'll still be talking with you here, and elsewhere. Enjoy your new forum homes and don't forget to migrate your treasured content!

On the topic of losing forum content - it's tough, I agree. Once we knew we were going to close the forums, we also knew we weren't going to maintain the community site indefinitely, so we opted to pull the band-aid off quickly rather than let it linger."

Welcome to new members!

If you're a refugee from WotC's forums, you are very welcome here. You can register here at EN World by clicking here. You'll find out community busy and vibrant, and generally welcoming. We've been here over 15 years now, and there is tons of useful content here and lots of great resources which you're welcome to explore. These include:

Haven't logged into the WotC forums proper since 08. I'm less shocked about then closing the D&D boards as much as I am the Magic boards. Was there a lot of activity or problems there as well?

Social media is too fleeting and poorly archived to replace forums. ENWorld has a bright future if it absorbs the exodus. I look forward to the new perspectives.

But no, seriously, guys, there's no trouble at all over at WotC.

It's okay - after we survived the Mayan Apocalypse of 2012 it was decided to postpone the planned Sky Falling incident. The next scheduled apocalypse is Ragnarok, which isn't for a few years yet.

No more or less than what Morrus meant when he said "expectations".

Its hard to put a finger on it, but there is a different feel between here and there. I don't have five reasons, the only one I can think of is there seems to be more scorn and attacks over there when folks have a difference of opinion.

But it seems I have ruined the announcement and the welcome, and that wasn't my intent.

Mods can delete my posts as they have no value.

Actually, it's not hard to see the difference at all.

It's typical for semantics debates over there about how to parse a rule in the PHB to drag on for literally hundreds of posts. And they establish absolutely nothing. I have no desire to see that happen here. Has it happened here? If so, I missed it. In any case, it doesn't happen often, and this forum is better off for it. Brace yourselves.

And the rules lawyering/munchkinism is amazing. Oh, you've figured out a way to cast Shillelagh on two quarterstaves and get two attacks with both of them one handed? And get a bonus attack with your STR damage with both of them too? That's nice. :hmm: (Don't use the word "overpowered" with this crowd. Just don't.) I see plenty of "is this legal" threads at EN World, but they tend to be reasonable.

Then there's that one guy who has a meltdown whenever someone uses the word "stacking." I mean don't even, because he'll school you: there's no such thing as stacking in 5E! And then he'll post a long-winded definition of stacking that's not even correct, with examples of stacking/non-stacking modifiers, some of which conflict with the incorrect definition he just gave you. It's hilarious the first umpteen times....

And the mods over there are quite active: a number of threads have posts removed due to violation of forum policies. Unfortunately, they have some members who fall into the 'uncivil' category. My prediction is that they won't last long if they come around here.

OK, that's only four reasons. I got stuff to do!

There are, however, a lot of really good posters over there, so I'll echo the welcome for the WOTC forum's civil and reasonable members.

I hope they will open up the 5e section to include some sub forums. One thing I like about the WotC forums is that they have separate sub forums for players, DMS, general, etc.

I'm actually really shocked by this. I don't do twitter or reddit, so WotC has pretty much just cut themselves off from any communications with me. Not that they had a presence on their forums, but they were very much alive with fans talking about the game. I can't believe a company would do this.

The MtG demographic is relatively young, so I can imagine there's more discussion for it on Reddit and other SM sites. My guess is this is the real reason for the boards shut down. Magic is 800-lb gorilla for WotC. If talk is going on elsewhere for it, why continue to expense a message board?
