Using a spear as a quarterstaff

is there any reason that a spear couldn't be used as a quarter staff in close quarter combat?

I think you could rule that a Spear could be used as an Improvised Quarterstaff if you wanted.

Improvised spear, yes. It's weaker (from a side blow, that is), but should be workable in a pinch.
