So Doctor Who, either Keys of Marinus or 1978’s Key To Time, is unlikely to have influenced Gygax’s 1976 Rod of Seven Parts.
No, but they where probably drawing on the same reservoir of pulp fiction for inspiration.

I guess the issue was the US adopting colour before the UK. Doctor Who sold better to countries still broadcasting in B&W. Which is why some of those 3rd Doctor stories only survived in B&W and had to be recoloured.

A Title Much Cooler Than Anything on the Old Site
Just going by the Doctor Who example, its fifth story ever (in 1964), The Keys of Marinus, featured a plot where the Doctor and his companions had to hop around a planet collecting keys to empower a long-dormant machine. The "collect parts to empower the whole" plot has been around a long time...
Yeah, Isis quested to find all the parts of her husband Osiris, who Seth has chopped up and scattered around Egypt, and used her magic to bring him back to life. That story predates the 70s by a bit. ;-)

Metaplot is dead, has been for a while. The Forgotten Realms hasn't actually moved anywhere in the past decade of publications.
Here’s a list of official FR dates in 5E adventures:

Out of the Abyss (1485 DR or later – perhaps end of 1486)
Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat (1489 DR)
Storm King’s Thunder (1490 or 1491 DR)
Lost Mine of Phandelver (Starter Set) (1491 DR)
Dragons of Stormwreck Isle (Starter Set) (1491 DR based on pregens)
Princes of the Apocalypse (1491 DR)
Tomb of Annihilation (1490 or 1491 DR)
Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage (1492 DR)
Dragon of Icespire Peak (Essentials Kit) (1492 DR)
Candlekeep Mysteries (1492 DR)
Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden (Winter 1489 DR or later, likely 1492 DR)
Descent Into Avernus (1494 DR)
Acquisitions Incorporated (1496 DR)

So it looks like the last FR date mentioned in a publication was in Candlekeep Mysteries released in 2021.

I got those dates from this excellent site.

It makes me wonder if Eve of Ruin will continue to keep the Realms ticking along and nominate a year for it or if they will keep it vague.

Personally, I think they should just reset the Realms back to Grey Box era (1357 DR) as it’s confusing for one setting to be ticking along but all the others to be reset - unless there’s going to be a big reveal as to why this has happened in Eve of Ruin.

It’s entirely possible Eve of Ruin could conclude with a giant reset of the Realms to 1357.

(I hope not.)

Why do people keep wanting the Realms to be reset? Why invalidate the decades of lore built up about the setting? It is what it is - a living setting that has changed over time. It's also a massive resource for anyone who wants to dumpster dive into the lore of the setting. I don't get these repeated calls for resetting the setting.

Yes, and note how those dates bounce around the same time, and never reference results of other campaigns. The Sword Coast is in a quantum Flux of possibility, not a metaplot advancing.

Good God, I would love if they did that.

As someone who got into the Forgotten Realms in 5E...the pre-Time of Trouvles version of the Setting is simply a better set-up for playing a TTRPG. Basically of that "living" part of the Setting is some bad novel from 1993 ruining or "solving" a great plot hook or adventure location.

Totally agree - a thumbs up emoji is not enough
