I admit to conscripting my gaming group to vote. I can morally accept that under the fact that I'm also bringing them to the wonders of ENWorld. Creating false accounts is just cheating and how sad is that just to win a filking contest?

I'm impressed with Tinner coming from behind to take the lead. If I hadn't entered myself he would have had my vote as he's stayed true to the original intent that Morrus posted.

I'm glad you don't feel bad about doing that, because that's exactly what I've done. :D
But instead of just my gaming group, I petitioned everyone who reads my LiveJournal, all my address book contacts, and the entire membership of the local community college Gamer's Guild!

Thanks for the kind words re. "We Didn't Start the Flamewar." (Vote NOW!)
There are sooooo many good songs in this contest.
And of course by good I mean solid cheesey filk. :D

Wombat's "When I'm Sixty-Four" ...The Beatles are requisite and this is a really fun gaming-related ditty. That said, the contest was to come up with lyrics which referred to EN World in-jokes.

Certainly a fair cop -- that was why I didn submit my second filk: "We are Rules Lawyers/We Are the Munchkins" (filking Queen)... ;)

All great songs. I couldnt do that if I wanted to. Just dont think that quickly. But you all did a nice job. Very creative. My favorite was, Hotel Eric Noah... Works great with the song. It just fits you know.

:)

Come on One Week you've almost made it!

BTW I was thinking and of all the groups whos songs have been done, the BNL are most likely to consider actually recording our version.

So vote for "One Week" on the off chance, and because It's been One Week.
I wonder - do any of the members of Weezer post on ENWorld? They've already got a few gaming references in their songs. If I'd thought about it, I could have filked one of their songs. That really could get recorded if it was up to snuff.

By the way, the word "filk" is new to me. I'm an avid linguist and amatuer lexicographer/logophile and would love to have a definition or a source or an etymology for this one. Can anyone here help me out?

I believe it is an amalgam of the words "fiction" and "folk" - and the music itself is supposed to be the sort of folk song one would find in a fictional world.

I know this from my days in the Society for Creative Anachronisms and RenFaires. Essentially you are "filching" the tune and rhyme scheme from a "folk" song -- thus "filk". Such SCA favourites as "Old Time Religion" (with lyrics about Cthulhu and Aphrodite), "A Grazing Mace", "Everybody Oughta Have a Glaive" and the like generally count.

The oldest reference to 'filk' songs appeared in a mimeographed fanzine from the 1940s. Mimeograph being a method of printing in which the letters were punched out of a sheet of waxed paper. This was done using a manual typewriter, and it meant correcting errors (typoes) was a pain. As I recall, the publisher was infamous for his typoes. "Filk", for instance, was what you got when you typoed "folk" on a qwerty keyboard. So "filk songs" was supposed to be "folk songs".

Fandom, being a contrary bunch even then, decided to adopt "filk" for science fiction folk songs and song parodies with a science fiction theme. Later fantasy and roleplaying games were taken into the fold.

The same chap also got the idea that "fan" came from the same source "man" does, and gets pluralized the same way. One man, many men. One fan, many fen. This was gleefully adopted by fandom at the time, and is still used by some fen today. So if you read something like, "There were fen in the fen." you know you're dealing with a fan.

This all I picked up a long time ago, and I have entirely spaced the poor chap's name. Sorry about that. One of the older science fiction writers such as Fred Pohl might be able to help, if you can get in contact with them.

Hope this helped.

I have also heard the idea put forth that "filk" is a combination of "Folk" music and "filth".
Which in a lot of cases accurately describes filk. :D
