Wanted: solid info on new WoD

First Post
Rather than hijack Mouse's much-deserved congratulatory thread, I thought I'd post a new one. Long story short, I'm with a group that's run a WoD LARP for several years now, and we're in the process of changing things around for once the WoD is no more.

However, the more time goes by, the more it seems that WW will be doing a "World of Darkness 2.0", despite early denials (or so it seemed to me). All I've been able to tell so far is that it will definately not be D20, and that it will probably have a lot of the same things but with different source material and history.

What do people know about the old incarnation- I mean, seriously know? I'm trying to get all the accurate info that I can, so we can start planning things out. I know they haven't realeased much info yet, and that there's a lot of rumors. I'm wondering if there's any more solid info that I've missed.

All I know for sure is:

1. It will NOT be d20.
2. There is a book called The World of Darkness coming out in August.
3. There is a book called Vampire: The Requiem coming out in August.
4. It will be it's own game, not a sequel to the current WoD. It will not be post apocolyptic.
5. Vampires will exist, but will be different. (Perhaps these vampires can walk in the sun for a short time, or be killed by staking for example.)
6. Werewolves will exist, but like Vampires, will be very different.

Rumors:
It has been said that Justin Achilli (the Vampire Developer) wanted fewer clans all along. (About six if I remember correctly.)

Personal predictions:
World of Darkness will be like a "core rules" book. Vampire: tR will be an add-on for playing vampires in the WoD. There will be similar books for Werewolf and maybe Mage. The games will be developed with crossovers in mind and they will all have similar origins and backgrounds. For instance, if you look at the curent WoD, Werewolves have a different take on the world than what vampires have. The fight the Wyrm, but the vampires have no idea what the Wyrm is. I think the new games will be more unified.

Just for the record, White Wolf never denied the new WoD. It was actually mentioned in the very first Time Of Judgment press release they put up on their web site. It said, toward the bottom, something like "An all new World of Darkness begins August, 2004." It was kinda buried in there, though, so a lot of folks missed it. Heck, I knew it was there, and I still missed it on the first read-through.

And believe me, I wish I could talk about the stuff I know. But they'd sic the groin-seeking cyber-weasels, the bee-spitting ninjas, and the lawyers on me.

Boo. Always liked the variety.

Ah, d20 without being d20. The Handful of d10's System Referrence, perchance? :)

Who knows, it'll take a darn good product to sell me. I liked the WoD and
they varying stories. :(

Well originally they were adamant that they would never reach gehenna, end of the world, blahblah. Ever. Still, if they are unifying the system that can't be all bad. (I hope).

I'm thinking it will probably be more like the Exalted or Dark Ages product lines: one core product that outlines the rules, gives detail on one supernatural type, and an overview of the others. Then "fatsplats" that give more detail on one of the other supers.

For example, the core Exalted book describes the Solar Exalted as well as the general rules of the game, and gives a bit of info on spirits, Dragon-blooded, Lunars, Sidereals, Abyssals, Fair Folk, demons, and so on. Then there's Exalted: Dragon-blooded which gives a lot more detail on DBs, describes the DB empire, tells you how to run a DB campaign, and so on. There's Exalted: Lunars which gives details on Lunars, describes the uncivilized areas at the edge of the world, special rules for Lunars, how to run a Lunar campaign, and so on. The other fatsplats are similar. For World of Darkness, you'd probably start with World of Darkness: Vampire doubling as a core book and as a Vampire book. Then there would be World of Darkness: Mage, World of Darkness: Werewolf, World of Darkness: Demon, and so on, each building on the info in WoD: Vampire.

Ashrem pretty much filled it in. That's all we know at this point. Likely when WW releases their new product schedule around March/April, they'll tell us more about what's coming up.

If it's any consolation, the people who worked on the previous WoD also liked it a lot — and the people who are working on the new WoD like that one a lot, too. Things will be different, and I'm sure that'll be no fun for people who are looking for more of the same. But a lot of careful thought has gone into deciding just what was cool about the World of Darkness in the first place, and how to continue to apply those strong points while doing something fresh and new.

We can't say much of anything about what will come, but we're allowed to say that it's pretty cool.
