War characters give me a headache

At gaming tonight, I suddenly realized: What is WotC's obsession with the word War with respect to PC/NPC individuals and groups and how much do we expect to see it in 4E?

Do we think we will see most of these in 4E?

Well, classes in D&D are designed around combat, slapping war onto another title makes it combat orientated. Or if it already was, it makes it ...better? Though the name War Hulk may have been from a possible legal issue.

I don't really think there should be many things besides warrior that use the prefix war-. Warlock and Warden are an exception though, since thats not the same etymology (warlock: 'wær' - faith, compact; warden: 'weard' a - watchman, a sentry)

Dungeons & Dragons has an overabundence of 'w' words in general. This is exceedingly stupid, as 'w' is inarguably the stupidest letter in the history of ever.

I don't know about that... At least w refers to a distinct semi-vowel. The letters x and c don't even refer to anything real. Even punctuations like ! and ? have more meaning than those letters. Pretty pathetic for a letter to be outdone by punctuation.

I don't really mind the use of "war" by WotC. It isn't any worse than the use of other common words like mage, blade, or spell. Since these words all convey some level of meaning, and are used consistently, I can't complain.

What bothers me is the excessive use of words like "theurge" or "psion", which have obscure origins to the average Eglish-speaker, and are not in common use. Also, the excessive use of of the suffix "-ist" (as in Kineticist or Lyrist) just bugs me.

I have the exact opposite opinion. Because my language is not an aglutinant one, things like "spellsword" "warblade" and other "nightspell" cause goofy translation. While "psion" or "theurge" translate nicely into "psion" or "theurge".

I'm on the other side. I rather see fitting, flavourful words with obscure origins than seeing strange bash-up words. But that's more a matter of taste - I just dislike these bashkit words... they have some goofy quality to me.

But if we're going all WAR... I suppose we should rename ALL classes:

Barbarian - Warrager
Bard - Warsinger
Cleric - Warpriest
Druid - Waranimist
Fighter - Warmaster
Monk - Wardancer
Paladin - Warknight
Ranger - Warstalker
Rogue - Warstriker
Sorcerer - Warweaver
Wizard - Warmage

Then the Warlock and the Warlord will feel right at home!

And then we can exchange War- with other cool prefixes to get a customizable feel! You want a superhero-campaign? Use Power-. You want a more friendly setting? Use Peace-. You want a stone age setting? Use Stone-. The possibilities are INFINITE!
