Warlock - sustain + save ends

Thanee

First Post
For example...

Curse of the Bloody Fangs

Sustain Minor: The target and any of your enemies adjacent to it take 1d10 damage (save ends).

How does this work?

Round 1 - Warlock - Uses Curse of the Bloody Fangs
Round 1 - Target - nothing special
Round 2 - Warlock - Sustains - Target takes 1d10 damage
Round 2 - Target - ... what happens now?

Does the Target get another 1d10 damage, like ongoing damage, or is that only when the power is sustained.

Does the Target only take ongoing damage, and no damage when the power is sustained?

If the power is not sustained, does it keep having an effect until a Save is made?

Can the power be sustained after a successful Save against the power, thereby renewing it (as long as it has been sustained all the time)?

Does anyone know how this is supposed to work? :)

The way I understand it, it keeps working as long as the warlock spends minor actions to sustain it, and the target keeps failing his save.

If the save succeeds, the spell ends and there is nothing for the warlock to sustain anymore.

If the Warlock stops sustaining it, the spell ends and there's nothing for the target to save against anymore.

So think of it as a "save ends" power that only requires a save if the warlock spends a minor action to keep it up, or a "sustains" power that has a maximum duration of "until the target makes his save".

I agree with Samurai. To make a round-by-round example like you did

round 1 - Warlock casts Curse of bloody fangs
round 1 - Target gets to save. If he saves, the spell ends. If he fails, see the line below
round 2 - warlock sustains spell, target and adiacent enemies take 1d10 damage
round 2 - Target gets to save. If he saves, the spell ends. If he fails, repeat the same process until either the target saves or the warlock stops sustaining the spell

I agree, except for one point. Until the spell has been sustained the first time there is nothing to save against, so the target (and any adjacents) is going to take at least an additional 1d10 if the Warlock sustains. The saving throw ends the sustain line, not the original attack.

So... this?

Round 1 - Warlock - Uses Curse of the Bloody Fangs
Round 1 - Target - nothing special
Round 2 - Warlock - Sustains - Target takes 1d10 damage for the first time
Round 2 - Target - Save - if successful, effect ends, if not...
Round 3 - Warlock - Sustains - Target takes 1d10 damage for the second time
Round 3 - Target - Save - if successful, effect ends, if not...
...

That's the way I see it Thanee. In the second line you could even throw in, "Warlock applies damage applicable on a miss, because CHA vs. AC virtually never hits" ;)

I didn't notice that this power is against AC. It is intended or it's a typo? Shouldn't all implement powers target a NAD?

It's never been subject to errata and there are other powers that target AC, rather than a defence.

*EDIT* For example, the Cleric's 'Spiritual Weapon' is WIS vs. AC.

Not all implement attacks need to be vs a NAD, but for this particular power, I see no reason why it should be vs Reflex or Will. For the most part it's on par with Avernian Eruption, just has slightly different mechanics.
