What about 4th edition made you go AHHHH this is D&D to me.

Ah, man, I like the whole treasure parcel idea. So much better/easier (IMO!) than a Character Wealth by Level approach.

Well, you gotta put it in context Wisdom. I thought the character wealth by level approach was the most bloody stupid thing in 3E, an edition that had plenty of bloody stupid things in it, imho.

I never had a problem with "characters hes gots what theys gots, heeyup, reckon", or whatever, y'know. Only this balance-craze and the crazy obsession with +stat items in 4E made money/level necessary, and sadly 4E, which could have improved on all editions by giving clear guidelines for expected plus of item/character level decided to continue this tradition of penny-pinching precision. Luckily it's a lot more ignorable than 3E.

Also the way the packages are handled for parties of less than 5 is just out and out bad math (assuming 5 is genuinely meant to be "baseline"), but that's not a surprise and a topic for another thread.

jdrakeh - Yeah, that was mostly how I felt :)

For me it was the concise, relatively basic nature of the classes and races and the "Points of Light" setting. It took me back to playing BD&D when I was 10.

This, This and so many times This

For me it takes me back to Sunday Afternoons once a month (24 yrs ago)with a friend pouring over the BECMI books. He ran the game - casual, fast awesome fun.

IMO DnD is not about spending hours on your own creating minutae about a world/NPC etc.

Its about memorable Dialogue, exciting battles, discovery and ABOVE ALL ELSE having fun with your mates.

Having the Hand and Eye of Vecna was pretty sweet too pity there was no room for the Head :]

The fact that so far I don't have to carry 27,000 books to a game session in order to have all the rules (or the perception of having all the rules for the players). While not quite as rules light as 1EAD&D, it comes close enough for me to be excited about it!!!

Hmmm. In a week or two the 4E "try out" game will start, so I'll find out then if any magic happens for me. From the sounds of your posts it makes me doubt it even more than ever. I'll know in about a month, when the game sessions are over.

For me it was the following things:

1) Easy to learn, lots of depth and quick and fun to DM

2) Feels like the good old days of D&D (2nd and 1st edition)

3) Streamlined rules that encourage roleplaying more than any previous version of D&D has and that does not in any way resemble WOW or other MMO gameplay.

For me it wasn't anything in the book, it was actually playing the game which made me think that this is still DnD, a new flavor of DnD.

For me it was that I could hand over the keep on the shadowfell pregens, explain some differences in 2 minutes, and we started playing. Since I could do that, I fail to see why some others interpret 4e as a big divorce from 3.x. (edit: Note: that is my personal opinion)

Frankly, 4e feels kind of Earthdawnish to me. :) It's like mixing D&D and Earthdawn together.

I love Earthdawn, so this is a good thing.

-O

100% total agreement.

I wonder if Redbrick is going to release an Earthdawn version using the 4e rules? Man..that'd be the shiz...
