As per the DMG, crafting of magic items is an optional rule, if your DM allows it. It's not a given that you can.

Should your DM allow you to craft magic items, you can not craft legendary items.

???

Your DM can allow you to craft Artifacts with macaroni and Elmer's glue, if it fits their world.

Hmm. I'm a bit confused. There is a table that shows Legendary items cost 500 000 gp's and a minimum level of 17th level to create a legendary item. But then on page 141 it says there are no formulas ( which you need to create an item ) for legendary items.

My favorite part, and I've written it a bunch of times already, is that it's a Guide book not a Rule book. It's like one big long advice column with some magic item stats thrown in.

Ok. I believe I understand this.

If your DM allows the crafting of magic items, you can craft a legendary item only if it is a new item, and not a legendary item that already exists.

Which would make perfect sense.

Love all the optional rules: Hero points, plot points, cleave through foes, etc. The monster charts are also helpful. They have a master list of all monster features and how they ultimately modify CR. I wish they included what each ability did though. Instead they just list an example monster that has the feature. (I guess they want to make sure we buy the MM). Of course, magic items is the biggest chunk of the book.

I can't even pick my favorite part yet. I'm bouncing from chapter to chapter like a kid on Christmas morning; I tear into one chapter just enough to see what's inside, and then I spot another brightly wrapped chapter with shiny ribbons on it and I'm off to see what's in that one. Right now I'm reading about the planes. (I love the handy list on page 43, of things you need to consider when designing your own cosmology! How have we never had this in any previous DMG?)

Best. DMG. Ever.
