My all-time favorite race is the half-elf. I know some people feel they're OP in 5e, but they were always underpowered in previous editions. I've always identified with half-elves since I was a teen. Not 100% sure why but probably because of the feelings of inner conflict and not belonging etc.

I also chose halflings because I just have a soft spot for them.

My third choice was warforged. I know I didn't like them when they first were introduced ("no robots in my d&d!") but I've since come to like them and have been having fun playing them. I'm currently playing a warforged wizard.

Strong disagree here. The more playable races the better, for me. They're just fun!

That said, I think 31 are too many for a single campaign setting. A DM and the players should work together to figure out which races are right for the story and setting they want to play in.
The problem is, as soon as a creature becomes playable it has to then be designed as playable (i.e. made much more Human-like in mechanical design) when its best in-game function is really to be different than Humans and-or to act as the party's opposition.

Never mind how easy it becomes to hit the situation that led to this quote from a Ranger of mine in 3e when some bozo brought in a Half-Ogre (i.e. something in his favoured-enemy group):

"I've spent half my adult life training up on how to kill these things and now I'm expected to adventure with one?!"
I find I usually wind up only using 6 - 8 races in my campaigns.
Human-Dwarf-Elf-Gnome-Hobbit-PartElf-PartOrc is enough creature types* for me; and if my arm was twisted I could drop Gnome and PartOrc and not cry about it.

* - Human, Dwarf, Elf and Hobbit have sub-races.

That seems true for your game, but not representative of how a lot of people play D&D these days.

Its an RP opportunity. ;)
Yeah, it was. :)

My Ranger stuck it out for another adventure or two, found the Half-Ogre* to be every bit as vile as expected, and left the party. (yet another instance of roleplaying myself right out of a game, but in this case it worked out well for other reasons)

* - truth be told, on thinking about it it might have been a Goliath or some other big thuggly beastie; all I remember now was that it was on my favoured-enemies list.
