D&D General What if Critical Role had stuck with Pathfinder? Or 4E?

anything about 'better as a video game' or 'was too hard to learn' or even (IMO a true one) 'Casters have too much supremacy' are opinions based on the above facts plus our own views... '4e failed' is really code for 'i didn't like 4e'

And here is the simple proof that you are oversensitive on this subject and start edition wars for no other reason than 4e being mentioned. Where (again, exact quote and citation needed) did I say that it was "better as a video game" than as a TTRPG ?

There's a thread here at EN World talking about it:

thank you I knew it was here, I just couldn't find it quickly.

Yup. First month sales, I think, have been confirmed in that order. At least I accept it. But I dint think anyone has done a good look at total sales. Which is what I thought hammerman was alluding too and I think might be otherwise. (But that’s just a suspicion on my part)

I was hoping hammerman had a source for that, at least I thought that’s the claim they were making.

The main problem I see with the recent arguments on sales is that it doesn't follow basic business logic. The idea that 4E sales fell behind PF (which happened a year before the 5E playtest was announced) because they cancelled products and started working on 5E is backwards.

They canceled products and started working on 5E because 4E no longer had a positive return on investment. They tried to resurrect 4E with essentials, it didn't work. By all accounts WOTC had low expectations for 5E and it was kind of a last ditch Hail Mary. It's one of the reasons for the slow release of modules and additional book core books were published, although the slow release schedule also seemed to work in their favor. If 5E had not been the runaway hit that it is the initial slate of products likely would have been the last release of anything D&D related for a long time, possibly ever.

None of that has anything to do with 4E's structure or my opinions on whether it was a good game or not. It's just acknowledging basics of how businesses work.

5e was also WorC accepting that they were going for a Marvell Comics play. Make millions in licensing and not really make much in the original media.

Looks like they got both instead!

Ah. So you meant initial sales.

There is some bit of rumor that total sales tells a different picture. But I dint have any facts.
I am going to assume you quoted the wrong qoute.... but the ONLY facts we have are what we were given. We can guess and assume and go by rumors (but they also run the risk of being misiinformed or outright lies)

I kinda said that.

But note that those facts are initial sales. That at least we know.

again NOBODY had internal memos from WotC (at least not anyone shareing) and NOBODY has that inside info here... we are all speculating... when it comes to facts all we know is what WotC has given us (and hey it isn't like they don't have a reason to lie or misslead or withhold some) but what we have says every edition out performed the one before it...with 5e being the biggest to date.
