What is it with Werewolves?

I've just realised that there are a load of werewolf movies coming out in the next year or so, the like of which hasn't been seen since about 1980. There's Cursed (which admittedly will probably stink), a sequel and a prequel to Ginger Snaps (Ginger Snaps Back and Ginger Snaps Unleashed) and a sequel to Dog Soldiers. Then you've got the wolfman appearing in Van Helsing, the next Harry Potter and other films with werewolves as supporting case (such as the sequel to Underworld).

It's cool that after two decades of nothing much (and certainly nothing much that's much good) there's a mini-renaissance going on.

I hear they got sick of playing second fiddle to the vampires in the Greater European Screen Monsters Guild. 'Bout time, too.

Dog Soldiers was good,

More werewolves are good. I'm a bit wary of a sequel to Dog Soldiers... great movie, but trying to stretch it out... eh.

Haven't seen Ginger Snaps yet, but it sounds good. Again, both a prequel and a sequel? Mmph.

Ginger Snaps rocked. I'm glad to hear they're making more -- I was worried they'd lost all their money. Highly recommended.

A sequel to Dog Soldiers is also welcome -- that movie was a very pleasant surprise, and if they're doing a sequel that means they made money, and I like seeing people who surprise me pleasantly making money.

I too was pretty impressed with Dog Soldiers. I rented it, thinking it would be amusing at best and ended up enjoying the best werewolf movie I've ever seen.

Granted, that ain't saying much, but it was good.

If you liked it, do track down Ginger Snaps -- it's very, very different from Dog Soldiers but for my money it's also quite a bit better. The performances from the two leads are spectacular, and the take on the werewolf legend is plenty fresh and fun.
