D&D 5E What is WotC working on now?

One reason for them waiting with any new announcements (at least until the 9th), probably is that they don't want to take focus from the DMG. They have built up a pretty good hype (well deserved), with their previews and it would be rather stupid, to dilute that, before a large portion of their customers has even gotten a hold of the DMG.

That...that makes a lot of sense!

I'm very curious to see what they've got coming down the pipeline and am very excited about the possibilities!

If anything I think the R&D crew needs a well deserved christmas break. I'll take the opportunity to thank them agan here: You guys & gals delivered a Quality product that will undoubtedly win awards. Thank you and take a well deserved break. In the meantime I have my 3 books, and look foward to my pre-ordered DM screen (then it will be complete!).

AFAIC I have all I need at the moment :)

To add to this a little bit, Mearls has been exceedingly clear on twitter in affirming that this is *exactly* the reason they're not talking about anything else in the pipeline right now. (I'm not keen on digging up a citation, but I know he said as much in reply to Mistwell .)

Amen to that.

The development of 5th edition was unlike any other I've ever seen. The sprawling public playtest, the alpha playtest, the whole sense of positivity in the community, culminating in such a well-received launch... And one that seems to have brought players back to the game, and back to the boards. A win all around.

I have nothing but respect and praise for the WotC team on this one. Bravo, and thank you!

And a good plan too. I wonder if the DMG might be the best selling of the core three? Too early to tell.

Edit: probably not. Most players won't shell out the money if they never actually DM.

We know:

*They are planning a bunch of multi-platform story adventure path type things that may (I guess for the elemental evil one will) come with some related player crunch. Very much the main focus.

*They are going to do something in terms of online columns, online Dragon...something. Clearest hint is that cut material from the DMG might appear there.

*They are looking at OGL type licensing and have said various times that they will have something for fan creations or something like that. So expect that soon.

*Perkins said they could do another monster book in-house.

*Lots of vague references to settings. Nothing at all specific.

So, we know something. Not much.

Hear Hear!!!
Break open that D&D Starter Box set under the tree (or PHB, MM, DMG) and call some friends over for some classic/old skool dungeon hackery ;)

I have a feeling we may have misunderstood what Mearls meant by "conversion guides". I too was hoping for guidelines on updating older editions' content to 5e, but I think what we may end up getting is just guidelines on how to make 5e play more like older editions.
I take this back. I was just rereading some of Mearls' answers from last month's Reddit AMA, and he makes a bunch of comments that sound like they are working on actual content conversion guides for updating older edition material to the 5e rules.

To whit:

Q. Also, what was the hardest thing to let go of when converting the older (3.0, 3.5, 4.0) rules to 5.0?
A. Hardest thing - don't sweat the details. 5e is fairly streamlined. Focus on capturing the essence of a monster or magic item, rather than every element of it. For characters, it'll basically come down to finding the best match for the options you've chosen. We'll talk about that stuff in the conversion docs we're working on.

Q. Any chance you will give pointers for 4e classes out of 5e? EK is not quite Swordmage.
A. We're planning for conversion guides later this year.
