Anything that offers a degree of escapism. I don't want a cathartic experience, I don't watch movies about terrible things because they're supposed to teach me something, or make me feel better about myself because I'm aware of everything that's wring with the world. Sorry, I know there are plenty of things wrong in the world, and me seeing a movie about them isn't going to help. Give me something mindless and entertaining, and I'll save my concern for those less fortunate than myself for when I'm donating to or working for charity or another occasion when it might actually mean something.

(Sorry, I went off on a bit of a rant there. It's one of my pet peeves.)

No need to apologize; I think you make a very good point. Movies are supposed to be entertaining. I'm not going to pay $50+ to go watch some depressing movie that is going to teach me some vague lesson. A movie that provides a degree of escapism would be great.

A well-written story, with characters that have depth and that I can care about, well acted and properly directed.

Go back to Aristotelian Principles:
1 Story
2 characters
3 Thought
4 Diction
5 Music
6 spectacle
In that order of descending importance.

I'm not going to pay $50+ to go watch...

$50 to watch a movie? How did it get so bad? Tickets here are about £10 for 2D (about $17), or a little more for 3D, which is bad enough. And I'm sure that when I went to see "The Wolverine" in Minnesota last year it was less than that (actually, I thought it was sub-$10, but I might be mis-remembering).

I wouldn't pay $50 to go see any movie, never mind one I wasn't sure would be good.
