I use everything for the most part but for campaigns I try to be more selective, such as limiting number of humaniod monsters or increase a type like undead because of my mythos.

I use about 55% humans (not human-oids), 20% aberrations, 10% undead, 5% constructs and 10% everything else, usually monstrous humanoids, humanoids, oozes, outsiders and magical beasts that fit in with aberrations.

I am not DMing now but the game really kicks up a notch when we are fighting creatures that we have DnD minis for... I think the DM has noticed this and has designed for this factor. We all gather round, look at the mini, and comment. Good fun.

For the conjurer I am playing, I definitely pick summonable creatures that also exist as DnD minis.

I tend to have a couple of major monster types to promote the theme of a story arc, with a variety of other monsters sprinkled in for diversity, where it makes sense. For instance, currently in one campaign the players are facing an alienist BBEG, so they have fought a lot of aberrations and psuedonatural-templated minions. If they chose to head in a different direction, they'd face different challenges.

I voted for everything, but what I meant was everything that makes sense. The campaign is mostly humans, elves, dwarves, and orcs, with some ogres, giants, dragons, undead, and constructs every now and then. But sometimes the wierd stuff just fits: like a beholder or an attach (that three armed giant thing).

Well, I'm runnig a very epic-style, good vs evil campaign, so I use a ton of undead and demons, which I love anyway, so everyone is happy... :)

I think a slightly more informative poll would be multiple choice posing the question - what kind of monsters do you tend NOT to use?

My focus is consistancy. I use foes that fit the campaign.

right now, I'm planning a d20 Modern game set in 1942 with very limited magic. The opponents are all going to be humans.

I'm also thinking about running a d20 Modern Urban Arcana setting. There, I'll literally be taking monsters from greyhawk, the realms, and other settings. They're sucked in by the mysterious shadow.

Finally, I'm considering a more classic-fantasy setting. But given that the focus of that setting is to eliminate the DnDisms, I'll be using a lot of home-brew monsters. And lots of Fey. The fey don't get no respect.
