The last time this topic came up, this is the dialogue that I offered up:

Uninformed Layperson: "Say, what's that book you're reading?"

D&D Player: "This is my Dungeon Master's Guide. I play D&D."

UL: "Isn't that game evil and satanic?"

D&DP: "No, no. Would you care for me to explain what the game is really all about?"

UL: "Um, ok sure."

D&DP: *leans in close* "Are you familiar with 'Furry Porn'?"

UL: "...Yeah."

D&DP: "WELL IT'S NOTHING LIKE THAT AT ALL YOU SICK BASTARD!!"

My usual is "It's about as evil as watching NASCAR, attending baseball games, or chatting it up around the water cooler about favorite sports teams."

However, I like Rel's answer better.

I usually answer, "If you looked at a Superbowl party and a bunch of people playing D&D, you'd see the same thing - just the terms would be different."

I do believe it was Henry's d20 Modern game a couple NC Game Day's back, that had cars blowing up due to over zealous PCs tossing grenades. [I have pictures.] So, cars burning can happen in either situation.

It's at gaming scenarios that you can hear such wonderfully out of context saying like "...but how do the zombies pay the rent?!?!..."

Trying to explain D&D is also not helpful if you're in the middle of building your gaming props, either:

"Dungeons and Dragons is not in any way EVIL! Oh, could you please pass the goat's blood?... Thanks..."
