What you can do with the OGL-

I'm NOT looking for legal advice. Just curious.

I've been looking at D20 Call of Cthulu and D20 Modern (and WoT Dwo) lately and I'm impressed with the way the basics of D&D (the SRD, I guess) has been changed to fit the setting or feel. It makes me wonder about how far you can change the basics of things.

Can you do this with the OGL?

* No character classes (as in D20 CoC)
* Armor absorbs damage (as in Grim n' Gritty D20 rules)
* Hit Points ONLY represent physical damage you can take (none of that roll with the punches stuff)
* Introduce a Defense score (as in WoT D20)
* Make Massive Damage = 10 HP + Con Adj (as in CoC)
* Change weapon damage
* Create a system for specific injuries, healing, and infection.
* Use some of the spells in the SRD, but change some of their stats
* Create a new magic system with new magic stats.
* Explain how to give experience.
* Change SRD monsters (add stats, take away stats, modify things).

I'm pretty sure the OGL allows all of that. But does that change things so much that it loses it's association with D&D/D20?

Everything you have is fine. Not only that, but it's all been done. :)

Groovy! Can you tell me where to find rules for:

* Armor absorbs damage (other than the Grim n' Gritty D20 rules that is)
* Create a system for specific injuries, healing, and infection.

Thanks!

In fact, if you have some pretty good ideas running around for these topics, now would be a good time to create your own - because there is a dearth of good material for these topics (in my opinion).

In fact, if you have some really good ideas on specific injuries and wounds, while keeping them sufficiently cinematic, Ryan Dancey would probably love to hear from you. He once wrote a whole forum topic on how "hit points suck" as a damage tracking element.

Cinematic... not sure what that means. What's cinematic and what isn't?

Is there any D20/OGL stuff that completely does away with hit points? Any links?

Meaning exactly as it sounds - the kinds of wounds you would find in Movies, Television shows, and Comic books.

If you're interested in his take on it, check out the forum on www.rpg.net called "Ryan Dancey tells you what to think about the game." :)

Oh. I don't think I'll be going in that direction. I was thinking of injuries and such to get away from that sort of thing. When I want cinematic I just stick with core D&D; works fine for me.

Hey thanks. Can you give me a bit more direction? I tried searching for that thread title, but apparently you can't search for the whole title, just the bits in it so I got this huge, vast list of results. If you know, can you tell me what the forum was or maybe what his username is so I can refine the search? Thanks.

Judge Dredd d20 uses Armor that absorbs damage (in a way)

T20: The Traveller's Handbook has an alternative to armor aborbing damage. It involves removing the lowest die for every 1 point in the armor rating until there is one die left. Then you subtract the result of the one die from the rest of the AR.

For example, you got hit with a 3d8 laser rifle: 3, 5, and 8. You got an AR of 5. That means you remove two lowest dice (3 and 5), leaving the last die with 8 points and AR 3 to account for. Subtract the remaining AR value from the result of the last die (8 3), and you get 5 points to mark off from your Lifeblood. Since AR do not protect your Stamina, you mark off 16 points from your current value.
