I also discovered that the goofy bastard who chooses to buy the books gets to be the DM, so my career as a player was essentially short lived.

END COMMUNICATION
As a member of the very small and elite Zardoz Fan Club, I salute you!

If you think owning the books cements you in the DM role, think about writing the bloody things. I hardly ever get to play any of my own RPGs as everyone hereabouts expectes me to run the sessions

Ir ia so good to have Jim Ward in the group so as to play his Metamorphosis Alpha game...and he is an excellent GM too!

Cheers,
Gary

Sorry to go so far off topic, but how is Jim doing, Gary? I met him years ago when I was working Gen Con and he seemed like a great guy.

1992 for me as well, I was in 5th grade. It was colder during recess than my jacket was prepared for, so I went just inside the doors and met a kid named Rich who promptly had me roll up a character. He was a Human Fighter with a Strength of 18/78, if I recall, and wielded a broadsword (2d4 vs. S/M, 1d6+1 vs. L). I don't remember what happened to him, but I had a pretty powerful wizard for a time after that. I think we were using the 1e Dragonlance book with mostly 2e rules (my PHB was 2e and had the warrior on the horse by Easley on the cover).

Rich and I grew apart, so I started running for my brother and a couple friends throughout high school. It wasn't until sophomore year of college that I had a full group to call my own. They were all newbies, which was pretty cool actually. Since 3e had just come out, it kind of leveled the playing field.

After college, I found a group on this site, and still play with a couple of those guys every few weeks. I've also just found a new group via EN World that I'm DMing for in Eberron, with the chargen session being this Sunday!

Jim is doing very well, and the 3rd edition of the MA game was introduced at GenCon. I believe he is about to add teaching game creation at college level to his repetorie of accomplishments :D

Cheers,
Gary

1979. Between Xmas and New Years. Our mother got us the red boxed set with Keep o nthe Borderlands, some minis and some paints. I was 7, my 9 year old brother rand the game, my father and his girlfriends daughter also played. I haven't stopped.

I never played Chainmail, but a gamer friend in...1983...brought the book/s? (cant remember if it was one or two or if he had two copies..I seem to remember two small paperback books) over to show them to me. Mint condition. I wonder if he still has them.
