Where have all the true geeks gone? :)

Von Ether

Legend
Some days I feel like a dying breed.

I'm an "old fashioned" geek. I don't like sports and love the cerberal stuff. It took me years to branch out into other games, like wargames and boardgames. Until I became a reporter and my job required it, most mundane matters like politics and finances bored me to tears.

Now adays, gamers are all over the map, they even like sports! A big chunk of diversity has hit the scene. The only problem is most of this crowd is in their early twenties, while I'm hitting 36. Makes me wish I could shave 10 years off and not be the old man in the group.

Where did all these more rounded people come from? LOL!

See...

You got me again.

I came in here to find out where all the circus freaks who bit the heads off of chickens went.

For a real geek, look up Thenigma / The Enigma / Slug - once a member of the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow.

Dextra: "So, did you like the breakfast I made?"
Slug: "Denise, you are asking the guy who eats maggots off the floor and washes them down with lightbulbs..."
Dextra: "Anyone else?"

I'm a young'un, I guess, and I dislike sports strongly for the principles behind sports today...

I'm not sure if I fit the stereotype right, though, because I do a variety of theatre, literature, mythology, science, etc. Anything that isn't sports, which may or may not set me up for the stereotype. Then again, I was voted to the Homecoming Court my senior year in high school, so I guess I'm not ;)

I turn 36 next month, and I enjoy sports. And fantasy/science fiction. And working on cars. And playing guitar. And hunting and fishing. And arguing politics. And beating various versions of Unix into submission for fun and profit. And of course, playing RPGs and games of all sorts.

And I'm not unique.

There are lots of people on this board in their mid-30's and older with diverse interests, not just the 20-somethings.

According to many of my sports-loving co-workers, the liking or not liking of sports is THE thing that makes one a geek (or not a geek).

Well by this definition, I've never been a geek! (at least for most of my adult life)

I actually regret not playing as much when I was younger (especially baseball) because I enjoy them so much now. I hated little league when I was young but I wish I had played more now.

Impossible! How else can one account for sports geeks (those guys who know every stat of every player and can dredge up the winning scorer of a New York Islanders game from 5 years back when the non-sports-initiate might not even be sure what the New York Islanders are).
