Who's happy about MMV being MMIV again?

Well that's it then. Crap was repeated in this post. It must be true. I hereby rescind every good thing about MMIV. Obviously, it's crap!
Wow. Silly me for having an opinion contrary to yours...

Tell you the truth, MMV was probably well into editing and postproduction by the time MMIV was released, so regardless of what the sale figures of MMIV were like, it was too late for WotC to do anything about it. If MMIV was indeed a commercial bomb, then I expect we'll see a return to the old format in MMVI.

Personally, I read through MMIV and then put it back on the shelf. It's packed full of dragonspawn and drow, and I'd never use either of them. And I find the ecology, lore, and tactics sections all start to sound the same after a while - I suppose it's rather hard to come up with inspired prose for 90th successive 'Knowledge (dungeoneering) results' table when you're on a deadline, after all! A WotC hadcover is about $50 in Australia, and that's a lot of money to pay for a book that contains a lot of paper I'll never get anything worthwhile out of. In the meantime, I'll stick to the Draconomicon/Libris Mortis/Fiendish Codex series for my new monsters...

I think MMIV has some of the strongest designed monsters of D&D 3e, but there are aspects of the format that work against it. I've really enjoyed using monsters from it.

Cheers!

So what we've established is that MMIV was great because it was DM-friendly and gave flavor to the new monsters...yet no one really like most of the new monsters.

In that case, I must be no one. And there's lots of other nobodies out there too.

I LIKED THE MONSTERS, OK?!

There. I said it. I feel better now.

And as a gamer with nigh-on 30 years' experience, I'm offended by your attitude that you're somehow a "better" GM than me, Razz, because I happen to like it and find lots of content I can work with therein. Stuff like that fires my imagination, not stifles it. Each to their own, I guess.

I was 50/50 on the MMIV, I'll skip the MMV for one reason alone.... I'm tired of seeing references to other splat books.

I love the stat blocks, I loved some of the new creatures. I didnt mind seeing a few classed popular creatures.
What I didnt like were the references to classes in splat books. I saw a few that used Scout, Ninja, Unholy Scion, and Marshal classes and abilities, etc. I dont own the complete adventurer or miniatures handbook and I dont want to buy them either. I see no reason that the MMV wont follow the same example as the MMIV so I'll pass.

Even the PHB2 (damn fine book I might add) suffers from "splat fever" in the beginning with substitution abilities for select splatbook classes. Now another "core" book like the Monster Manual is on the same track with references to these splats. Again, I'll pass from now on.

The Core books are losing their cores. Yes, I know that the "complete" series is part of the "core" line, but Core to me are the three main titles that are needed to run the game.

The new format would not bother me so much if they didn't give paragraphs on useless material like typical treasure (can be a one-liner), ecology, and advanced creatures (can be a one-liner). I don't care about the gestation period of a tentacled-hairy-six clawed-asexual-bumble bee thing nor how many young they produce. Shouldn't that stuff be dictated on a whim by a DM should the need to know arise?

I disagree. Thats like saying "we dont need to know the gods of the FR, their symbols, or their beliefs - thats the DM's job." I'm glad they brought ecology back. The treasure is nice as well - its good to see that creatures dont automatically have a smattering of coins, potions and tapestries because the rules assume that PC's will have X loot by Y level, and if they fight non-treasure giving critters, they'll end up gimped. List GP values for hides, eyeballs, and poison sacs (and harvest DC's). I grew up attaching vacuum pumps to trolls to make potions of healing.

And I don't know about you guys, but those map lairs should go. It's wasted pages. Because you can print them for free on the website within the week the book is released.

The lairs I could generally do without, unless its something really cool. A 2 page spread of crappy gnoll huts doesnt count.

Just curious, as I obviously don't know for sure, but if there is no reference to other splat books in it will you buy MMV? :)

Yes! :) I love monster manuals.
MM2, MM3, and the FF still sit at my side as I run my group through the AoW.

Well, that sounds rather oxymoronic to me. If the flavor and fluff was supposed to be better for a DM to use the monster, yet the same DM doesn't like most of the new monsters, what exactly did MMIV accomplish then?

"We" haven't established any of that stuff. Some people liked the classed monsters, some didn't. Some like the new monsters, some didn't.

And exactly where has the imagination with people gone these days? Now that WotC books have spoonfed us for so long, we're like 40-year olds still living in mom's basement. I don't know about the rest of you, but I open up my Fiend Folio or MM2 frequently and say to myself "I can do this with them...or this...or that!" Again, I ask where are your imaginations?

You've asked that offensive question in every-so-many threads, and you've been supplied ample answers by people much more thoughtful than yourself. It's really not that complicated, so I'm just going to conclude you just love tossing out the flamebait and mash the ol' "report bad post" button.
