Why all the hatin'? Let's love.

For whatever reason, people seem to use language which inflates their real feelings. I don't really think so many people genuinely 'hate' RPG stuff, and inflammatory exaggeration such as 'broken' and 'completely unplayable' (in the recent THAC0 thread) is like a constant spiky friction on productive discussion.

In general, it would be fair to say there's a fair bit of psychological projection going on, as well as the tribalism nothing to see here refers to (though I don't buy that the human mind responds more strongly to the negative, except in certain cultures, and to certain neurotic or psychotic minds).

I think a big part of this is the perspective of being on a board where everyone is RPGing. On the board, I will express a nostalgic preference for 2nd Edition, and a technical preference for 3/3.5. Outside of the board (or my gaming group), I would vocally defend D&D, period, without reference to a particular version.

We argue about the fine details here, because we're all in the family, so to speak.

I like all the D&D that I've played...orange spined AD&D hardcovers to the present version.

I also liked world of darkness, shadowrun, battletech/mechwarrior, and starwars, but haven't played these as D20 yet.
I also like beer AND wine. I know...crazy.

If I have a dislike for a game, I usually don't talk much about it, and that's it. There are a few games that inspire a strong negative feeling in me, but no version of D&D belongs in this category. I'm somewhat amused about these edition wars ;).

To a certain degree, I can understand some vocal criticism from followers of an older edition, as newer editions tend to erode their player base substantially. I don't understand the same vocal criticism from followers of the newest edition, though. They should just be happy with the current situation :).

Yes indeedio, this is a function of "internet rant mentality." Although I was reading the newspaper editorials today ... it's there too. :) Someone was "sickened" by the politics involved in rerouting traffic from one neighborhood to another. Sickened! -2 to all checks and everything! (Sorry to mention politics!)

Do you actually dislike [or hate] any edition of D&D?
Hate, no. Dislike, yes: All editions I've played that aren't 3.5. That is: AD&D 2e & 1e, and D&D 3.0. (Of these, I dislike 3.0 the least, obviously.)

Can you like an edition without disliking another?
The two are not necessarily related. I like 3.5 and dislike the other editions; someone new to 3.5 might like 3.5 but not care either way about the others.

Can you state your preferred edition without backhanding another?
Of course.

And here is a big challenge: Can you state why you like *D&D* as a game/genre without referencing a particular edition of D&D?
I like RPGs. Fantasy is also a favorite genre of mine. Further, a lot of D&D settings are to my liking.

I don't know if I'd call it "internet rant mentality" so much as "radical unregulated 24hr news channels mentality", but yeah, it does suck, doesn't it?

You have a discussion on editions with someone in person with which you differ and its done. On the internet it just goes on and on and on.
