Why do you prefer CoC 5.x > 6???

A few days ago in another thread, a couple of people mentioned they prefer 5th edition Call of Cthulhu BRP over 6th edition. A couple of us asked why, but no one ever responded, hence the new thread.

This is not to start a flame war or anything, I'm authentically curious what the advantages or changes are ...

Any help?

This isn't going to help, but I like 5th edition because that's the version I have.

(Actually, I have the 1st edition rules, too, and used them for years and years. I'd probably still be using them, but one time I was out of town, and some friends wanted me to run a CoC game, so I picked up a copy of the rules at a FLGS, there...and it was the 5th edition. IMO, it doesn't really matter what edition of the CoC rules have -- all the BRP editions are pretty compatible.)

I'm actually part of a not entirely tiny camp that prefers the 3rd Edition hardcover. I suspect that several people prefer 5x because it is available in many different varieties of hardcover, whereas 6 is only available (last time I checked) as a perfectbound paperback.

I didn't think there actually was a difference between 5.6 and 6th edition, other than the name.

Personally, I prefer 4th edition myself. Since that was the first version I played. Basically they are all the same, rules wise, just slightly different skill lists I think very earlier versions handled the education stat a little differently.

The main difference is what comes with them. Different versions come with different scenarios and source material.

For versions of CoC rules see Yog-Sothoth.com's product db @ http://www.yog-sothoth.com/cocdbres...MagazineForm=0&Submit=Search+Product+Database

I agree, in general. I know that Pagan Publishing did their own version of the "core" rules for CoC in TUO 7/8 or so, which was their 5.5 version IIRC. I've never really sat down to do a/b/c/d/etc. comparisons between versions of the rules, though I suspect that some folks have over on yog-sothoth....

Are you KIDDING?

The font type in the chapter headings on the magic and creatures sections are TOTALLY different! And they used different border styles in the text boxes! That's a HUGE change!

And you call yourself a CoC fan. :p

Thanks for the tasty link, Grodog. I didn't know Pagan put out their own version of the rules. Curious. I'm sure I'll probably never get to see them, though.

So is Bottle City available for public consumption yet? As soon as I can scrape together two sheckels, I need to get me some of that grodoggone-goodness.

I could have sworn I saw a hardcover version of 6th edition. I have 6th edition. Never played past editions other than the d20 version, so my opinion on the subject doesnt really matter.

Are there more?

Yes. The first Fifth Edition Limited Edition Hardcover was white (and not leather) with a non-standard interior. There were multiple different versions of the 30th Anniversary Edition leatherbound hardcovers (all of which are 5.5, IIRC). The blue hardcover that you mention is actually a 5.5 Edition book. I think that there were something like 6 different hardcover prints of 5x CoC editions.
