Why is Palladium so ant-d20?

Besides WoD being White Wolf's main line, we were discussing the point of converting established settings/games to d20. Palladium did not convert Rifts to d20, and my point was that White Wolf did not do that with any of their lines, either. No conversions means no blurring of product identities. WoD can in no way be associated with WotC, but is clearly a WW only product.

But the World of Darkness games are not rules-heavy, class & level games well-suited to a d20 conversion, and no World of Darkness games are obvious D&D knock-offs.

Also, WW did convert a few of their minor games to d20.

Huh? Which? They did launch some d20 games, like Everquest, but I don't know of any conversions they've done. They did, however, convert WoD into GURPS at one point.

Trinity, Aberrant, and Adventure. I haven't looked into them, but they are out.

There's a GURPS version of Vampire so I don't see why there couldn't be a d20 version. It's not like GURPS is rules lite. Maybe those White Wolf guys hat of d02 know no limit.

D'oh! I'd forgotten about those, you're right! Of course, all three of those were out of print too, which is probably the difference.

Ya, but weren't there problems with how SJG handled the liscense or something? I thought that was why they were limited in release.

GURPS is no threat for White Wolf. Just compare the size of the companies. If WW does a GURPS conversion of Vampire, this simply says: look, our cool game works even with a rules-heavy engine. On the other hand, GURPS will have limited appeal to their existing fanbase, so there won't be any damage done to their existing game.

d20 is a different beast. For a very small company or game line, going d20 might mean multiplying sales. For a well established game line with a solid customer base, going d20 means associating a good part of your image with the market leader and damaging your clear image in the public eye. The game line gets subjected to the whim of another large company. Not a good strategy ;).

Didn't they do a d20 conversion of Exalted?
