I'd guess that both shows are internationally successful because they show a pretty cliché view of Germany - it's all grey and very depressing.

Grey and depressing? Maybe the colours of the film, but I always though the characters were cheerfully quirky. Or maybe quirkily cheerfull. Especially those by Horst Tappert, Rolf Schimpf and Pierre Sanoussi-Bliss. The sort of guys who would say to themselves "the world may be a bad bad place, but I won't let that stop me from anything".

Of course, if they were characters from Finnish cop shows they'd spend half of their time looking thoroughly depressed and on the verge of suicide before saying "screw that" and leaping into action.

I can't speak for the rest of Germany, but both Berlin and Münich were very grey and depressing when I was there.

I found Cologne to be neither grey nor depressing, in spite of the fact that I was there in late November. Fun place. Great little Argentine steakhouse somewhere downtown too, within walking distance of the cathedral. Sadly, I could never hope to find it again.

But I'd be careful. Cologne is pretty close to the city where Uwe Boll was born.

It'd probably be just as easy to find an excuse to go to Buenos Aires, frankly.
