Will save to extinguish fire on self?

When you get hit with oil or alchemist's fire, do you need to make a will save to keep fighting and not put yourself out?

I don't know if that's an offical rule, but it's one that I use, from time to time. PCs can metagame that they can take the damage and not get killed, so in situations where pain/fear might overwhelm PC desires I ask them to make a Will save to do what they want as opposed to what they're character might what to do :)

Edit to add "...from time to time."

Could be a fort save, too. Just tough it out. But yeah, not officially. And in fact, I wouldn't make a character do it. There's no will save not to dive into lava... why should there be one for piddly little stuff like alchemical fire.

I say a Will save because it's mental fortitude to ignore the fact that you're on fire and in pain.

Yeah, I don't often do this, but I may from time to time - especially if a character has a fear of fire.

BTW - when character's start metagaming, like figuring out that they can swim in lava and do it because of metagaming, then the rules stop applying and they burn and die horribly :) I've never actually have had to do that, but I would if anyone decided to do that, and it would most likely come up when someone decides to jump off a cliff to escape with "minor" injuries.

Because fire burns. Burns hurt no matter the source, and they are distracting. So, you are telling me that you are not distracted when you accidentally burn yourself with something as puny as a match.

No, that is a house rule which I guess is pretty common. Personally I do not use it.

Of course you also increase the cost and CR of items modified in this way to account for making them much more powerful then the official rules intend? ;)

Good thing I have a great will save since being on fire does have its benefits sometimes. I was trapped between some Yeti and a large fire. Being a spellcaster and seeing and feeling what a Yeti can do to you I oppted to jump through the fire. I failed my save and cought fire, luckily I noticed that the Yeti didn't want to play with me any more once I was on fire and the 1d6 fire damage was much less than what a Yeti can do, so I opted to stay on fire. So Icebear is that Metagaming?

As for jumping off cliffs does that count for Monks too?

I wouldn't implement this. It would greatly increase the power of continuing damage, like alchemical fire and Melf's Acid Arrow. Combat would revolve around winning initiative, firing off a continuing effect, and then pummeling your enemy while they fail to fight back.

Sure, fire is distracting, but so is getting hit with a sword; the latter is just as painful, and can be more immediately deadly. If a little pain distracts you so much that you can't even swing your weapon, you'll never survive past your first combat.

If I'm in a fight for my life, I won't be distracted by much of anything. Adrenaline is wonderful stuff.
