Win 95/98 Tech Question

Starman

A friend of mine just got a new computer and gave me her old one. It still has Win 95 on it and I would like to upgrade it to 98. The problem is I don't have the Win 98 upgrade. My version of Win 98 came with my own computer I bought a couple of years ago.

How do I uninstall Win 95 and put 98 on?

Just use your win 98 CD as you would the upgrade disk. It will have options for over-writing, and it will 'check for existing components'.

I would recommend copying the win 98 CD to a "Flat File" located on C:\WIN98. This is not an illegal practice, and is recommended by win98 tech support during install/reinstall. You don't need to dig out your disk every time you need to patch or update drivers, that way.

I did try to use my 98 cd as I would the upgrade disk and it told me I could not do it and needed to get the upgrade disk. Did I overlook something?

Is there stuff on this computer you need?

Otehrwise, I'd say start over from scratch. Be sure you have a good win98 boot disk first though!

Forgive me for sounding like an idiot, but what exactly do I need to do to

Oh boy, it's been a LONG time since I did this. You'll want to have your clean boot disk, with CD rom drivers on it.

If you aren't versed in DOS, this is something you should REALLY have tech support work you through. I'd not feel comfortable helping you through a forum like this.

I asked a collegue who has worked win98 tech support.

Run win 95

Insert the Win98 disk.

The top option in the autorun will be "Install Windows 98"

Just do that and you're golden.

It didn't work. When I put the CD in a window pops up and asks if I would like to install 98. When I click yes, it checks the C drive and then says it is preparing the install wizard. After that I get an error message that says:

Your computer already has an operating system installed, which cannot be upgraded by this version of Setup. You need to obtain the Windows 98 Upgrade. Message SU0168

Am I screwed?

It might be that your restore disk from the other computer is computer specific. For instance a e-machines windows 98 disk will not install windows 98 on on a non e-machine, I'm not sure what the mechanics are on this, but it just doesn't work. I bet there is a way around it but I don't know one off hand. I think Dell's restore disk are this way too, some other companies restore disk might be this way also.
