D&D (2024) With Nick Weapon mastery do both weapons need to be nick to use it or only the first or only the 2nd?

So I'm wondering how Nick works exactly.

Assuming I have the Nick mastery:

1. Can I make a second attack as part of my action if I am carrying a short sword (Vex) and a Dagger (nick) or do I need to be using two weapons with Nick?

2. If I can make a second attack, does it matter which weapon is the second attack (and gets no modifier)?

Yes, you can Vex and Nick.

Nick is your second attack, which does not get the modifier by default.

Same TWF rules, but without using the bonus action on the Nick weapon.

And you can still TWF without Nick, by using your bonus action as before. (Though not sure why you would).

Ok next question -

Say I am holding a Short Sword and Dagger as above and I use True Strike with the Short Sword, can I make a nick attack with the dagger (using strength or dex for the attack modifier) as part of that same action?

I don't believe so, as that is a Magic action you make an attack with, not an Attack action.

I readily admit my understanding of TWF/Neck is not great right now though!

I expect...

True Stike is a spell. Not the Attack action. So doesn't work.

You can use take Magic Initiate, get Shillelagh to make a club a d8 with either Int, Wis, or Cha, and TWF with that. Though it doesn't have Nick, it has Slow.
So it would take a lot of bonus actions to pull off.

A Club is light so you could use a club in your main hand and a dagger or scimitar with nick offhand.

So its now three atcks under 5th level, and 4 attacks at 5th level. One weapon has to be Nick, the other three just have to be light, so you could have a variety of weapon masteries there. With the Dual Wielder feat, you don't need to use Light anymore. Therefore, it seems to me Nick is a combo-starter; you start with Nick and that opens up a range of different weapons you can produce to knock your opponent around, sap them, vex them, etc etc.
